Hi, the kittens been doing very well, and has been adjusting to the Whiskas fine. The newest worry, though, is that she has a small red lump on her lip. She's eating and chewing on things with no pain at all and didn't mind me prodding at it, but does anyone have any ideas on what it could be? She'll be having her vaccinations in a few weeks so if there's no chance of it being an immediate problem I may wait until then to bring it up, but if it could be something more I'll make an appointment. And her name is Jinx, by the way!

Glad that Jinx is improving - love her name. I don't know what the red lump could be but if it isn't bothering her then leave it for now - if it gets worse take her to the vet.

I'd phone the vet about the lump if it was me. One of my cats kittens got one of the diseases they are vaccinated against before vaccination just after going to her new home and it caused boils and things in her mouth at first. Sure the lump is nothing, but with an unvaccinated kitten I would call the vet asap for advice just to be on the safe side. I would never want another cat to go through what she did. Sorry, don't mean to worry you. It could be nothing, but please call the vet for advice anyway, they will let you know whether you should bring her in for a check or whether it is fine. Jinx is a great name. lotsofcats awww, well lucky kitten ending up in such a loving home. And what a horrible person, if they didn't want the kitten they could have advertised in a newspaper or something, plenty of people would take a kitten for free or even pay for it (when I was trying to get my first kitten, Smudgie, it took weeks as every time the newspaper came out with kittens, they'd all be gone by the time we got there, despite us phoning them and driving through at the same time haha). I cannot understand how someone could get to the point where they think leaving a kitten in a box by a stream is a good idea. Clearly they thought they were being nice not just straight out drowning it, but leaving it there to be preyed on or starve is just as cruel. So glad it ended up with you instead! And glad your son stood up to your brother in law and wouldn't just leave the kitten there, you must have been really proud of him for that

I must admit kirstyor, I'm torn in what to advise. Lotsofcats advice is the one I probably would have given but Smilesbetter has a very valid point. As I said before I've never had kittens & they will probably be more susceptible to various bits & pieces & a few weeks could be a long time for her if it is something to be concerned about. I can be a worrier with our cats but have learnt, thanks to good advice from forum members, to adopt a wait a day to see what happens policy unless its quite obvious they need a vet! I think I'd phone the vet, especially if you get on with them, for advice

lotsofcats yeah but this kitten has already had stomach problems and things. A 5 week old kitten who's been really healthy can grow up fine, I mean many kittens are already weaned naturally by then, but if they've not been weaned naturally by the mother, and they've been ill so young, then I wouldn't expect the kitten to grow up to be very big. The dog in my avatar was the smallest in the litter and the breeder warned me he was likely to stay tiny because he wasn't eating. He just wasn't interested in food. Week after collecting him I put him on raw and he grew and grew and grew. He's grown bigger than his parents and siblings.

Presumably your dog weaned fine though, I just mean if they are not naturally ready to stop weaning, and then being ill, it can really affect the growth rate. Not always, but from the ones I've seen it seems to be the case.

Don't know what you mean about my dog weaning fine. He wouldn't eat commercial dog food at the breeder's and he wouldn't eat it at my place. As soon as I offered him a raw lamb breast it was like 'thank God, food I can eat'.
