Hi guys, new to the forums here. I've got a 4yr old male lab called Oscar. I need some tips on getting him to behave off the lead. On the lead he pulls a little but not trying to run but walks with his nose to the ground sniffing everything so when he wants to smell the lamppost hell quick turn attention to it etc.... This im slowly correcting him by standing still as soon as I feel him about to go and he will walk back to my side, maybe talk a little bit after a few goes!!!
I really want to enjoy walks with him and my family and off the lead. I need to see the other dogs before he goes to put lead back on otherwise I better starting running! This is a typical walk: Field by my house he runs off but not out of my sight nor me his. He's in the bushes sniffing, marking etc.... I use a dog whistle and after a few loud toots he will come back but not everytime. He pick up s scent and his attention turns to that. Can anyone help with tips?

Hello, welcome to the forum.
Do you only call him to take him home? There is a possibility that he has learned that when you call, his fun off lead time is over, and that coming back to you isn't particularly rewarding.
If you aren't worried about him running away or getting injured or anything, and it's just a recall problem, then if keep letting him off the lead, but now start doing some recall training. Now and then call him over and give him a high value treat when he does as he is told, then tell him to go off again. He will fairly quickly learn that coming over to you is great and that it means getting a great treat, not having to go home. Obviously he will know that sometimes when he comes over, you actually still take him home and therefore end the fun, but gradually he will get better at it. Plus you can make the process of getting the lead on and going home fun too. My dog loves running with me, so sometimes after she has come over and I put the lead on, I go for a little sprint with her which she absolutely loves, or she gets a tasty treat or a wee game of tug of war on her long rope toy. In any case, she knows that getting a lead on doesn't mean the fun is over, and never ever tries to avoid getting it put on. When play time is over, I call her over, she races to me and sits down calmly while I clip on the lead, no bother.
Oh, and if you are in a hurry, I find that turning and running in the opposite direction from the dog in question is a fantastic way to get a dogs attention and to get it to come over to you quickly haha.

I'm afraid I can't help richje100 as I'm a cat not a dog owner but I just wanted to welcome you to the forum I see you've already had one reply & others may add more.

Thanks both. I bought a halti head collar so I thought if I took it back to basics and start afresh! Massive difference straight away and I'm not joking. He gets treat each time he puts his head through the collar (saw a video on YouTube to get him accustomed to it) and now he even walks around the house with it on as if it's nothing so great start. Walking is such a pleasure, his attention is on me as we walk he's looking up and not sniffing the floor. Even my 2 10 years can finally walk him after a bit of practise. He will sit when told and k can leave the lead on the floor and he doesn't move. Got a little excited when another dog came near but simply turned around and he didn't take any notice. I even got the chance to take a photo of him with my kids say next to him Hopefully, after some weeks he will keep his attention on me and try on a long leash.
He even jumped from the boot of car dragging his lead and walked calmly into the house which I'm pleased with.
