On Monday we noticed that Flirty had a small swelling on the side of his face. We though we'd give it 24 hours to let nature take its course if it was something simple, anyway last night when I was going to bed I had a feel of his face and the swelling had increased a bit and I could feel a small lump, but it didn't feel attached to anything. Well we got him into see the vet tonight, and he had a good look in his ear and could see a fluid filled sack. He's not sure of the cause it could be a couple of things so to start with he's given him a anti inflammatory/anti biotic injection and we have to give him one anti biotic table twice a day for 12 days and three drops in both ears also twice a day. If its just and abscess and it bursts we've to leave it open to drain, but if after his course of tables there is no improvement we've to take him back and he will have to be knocked out to get a more thorough look at it. Where the lump is, is when the glad that produces wax is, and this could be blocked or the worse case scenario is the glad has turned cancerous. He's now curled up in his basket and when I ran my finger over his face the lump has got a bit bigger, so fingers crossed it is an abscess and its going to burst and he;ll just feel a bit poorly for a few days. When we were told he needed the tables, I just said Oh joy!! so Chris (the vet) said we could crush the tables, mix them in some butter and smear it on his paws so he'll lick it off. Just a small tip I thought other cat owners might be interested in.

Oh poor Flirty, that will be painful for him. Hope the meds do the trick.
I remember Roman having an abscess in his ear - it gave me heart failure as we didn't know about it but saw fluid coming out of his ear after he's been out - my old First Aid training (human) remembered fluid from the ear was a sign of a skull fracture - felt a right idiot having got a vet's appointment quickly on that basis!
Thanks for the useful vet tip. Ours have suggested mashed Dreamies (or the like) mixed with the crushed tablet or powders with a little water to make a paste. We use Arden Liver paste as a medium for the powder or mixed in tuna.

I hope that the medication is working and that Flirty feels better soon.

We managed to get the drops in Flirtys ears this morning and I got the first antibiotic down his throat first thing this morning. This evening again we got the drops in without too much fuss, but the antibiotic was a big no no, so I tried the butter trick and I can report it was a great success. Flirts came down for something to eat about an hour after the second lot of meds and there is a load of gunk coming out of his ear, and it also looks like the swelling has gone down. PHEW!!!

Just had a closer look at Flirty's face and what I thought was gunk coming out of his eat is in fact a hole in his face where the abscess has burst. I only saw it when I was able to wipe his face.(had to wait until he'd settle for the night first) Poor lad! but I bet it feels a lot better for him now.

Ouch that really does look painful. He will be feeling so much better now its burst, especially as it came out of his cheek rather than in his ear.
lets hope he continues to be good about the eardrops & the antibiotics.

He's still feeling a bit sorry for himself I think, but he's certainly doing a lot better, his face is back to normal size. I've just got home from work and been to check him, and it's looking nice and clean, but now he has a scratch on his ear. I don't know what am I going to do with him eh. He wasn't impressed with the ear drops this morning but he took his antibiotic ok for a change. I think I'll use the butter tonight though.

Could he have scratched his ear if scratching his sore face? Oh well at least he got scratched while taking meds that will prevent the scratch getting infected Glad to hear he's being a good boy with the tablets but suspect he can feel the drops more now the swelling is down/

That or he's had an ear infection, which is what he is being treated for.
