One of my cats, Bob, moved in from over the road due to neglect. He is a big fella and looks quite tough although he is really a big softy as became apparent yesterday. He likes to tease my other five cats by running up to them suddenly but doing nothing.
I've been feeding a neighbours cat (Cat X to protect his identity) for ten weeks as the owner had been in hospital. The neighbour has just recently passed away and I'm still feeding the cat as the next of kin don't want to know even though Cat X was originally theirs.
So far there has been no incident between the two but last night they got a bit too close and Cat X made a vicious attack on Bob who tried to run away but was pursued aggressively.
Bob came it later and hid wherever he could, under the bed, behind the settee, in dark corners etc and has not eaten in over 24 hours nor has he done his toilet duties. I've kept him indoors as I feel I may never see him again if I let him out he's in such a state.
Bob has been hissing and growling a lot but appears to have no physical injuries although it hasn't been easy to check. He allows me to scratch his head but that's as far as I get. I got down on the floor today next to him and he came on my lap which was a good sign.
As he's in such a bad way, is there anything I should do for him or will time heal all? Question is, how long will it take?

Hi john9159, Maybe some Feliway or Pet Remedy plug-in diffusers which are supposed to give comfort to cats Also let him be & come to you when he wants. The getting down on the floor was a good idea. Sounds like Bob got a shock & just needs time to recover. Hope all goes OK. By the way how's Maisie?

It's very kind of you to take in your deceased neighbour's cat but perhaps cat x is now one cat too many. If it's used to being an only cat it'll be hugely unsettled going in with many and probably went for Bob as a territory claim, i.e. Take out the biggest guy. I agree re feliway and maybe look into zylkene which is derived from car milk and is supposed to mimic the calming effect of being suckled.

Poor Bob and poor cat X too - seems that they both want to be top cat.
