Hello, I've just joined as I am the proud new owner of a 16 week old male kitten called Sylvester! I had cats as a child (a long time ago!) but could do with some advice! Sylvester is one crazy kitten & I think most of his behavior is typical, however one thing he does I find a bit strange??? He only does it to me, not my hubby or little girl! If I wear a particular pink, fluffy dressing gown he will sit on my lap & using his claws to I guess knead my dressing gown & he 'sucks' or 'chews' the material??? He will purr like a lawn mower while doing this & then snuggle up & fall asleep on my knee? He's not been neutered yet (next month) but I've looked at other threads & he's not 'humping' me thank goodness, at least I don't think he is??? We've had him for almost 4 weeks now & he's done it almost from day 1! Should I be discouraging this behavior? Many Thanks Ais ?

My dog does this every night to his blanket, he scraps it up kneads it with his paws whilst suckling on it, he does this during the day too some times. I don't worry about it at all, just think its his comforter, oh and he is 7 LOL See no reason why this should be abnormal for a cat, but a cap owner may come along and correct me tonib lotsofcats dutchkitties to name a few Welcome to the forum too hope you enjoy it here

Thanks for that! Hopefully that's all it is! We find it quite amusing & he's super happy when he does it & he only does it with that particular dressing gown! It must be one special dressing gown then cause my daughter loves to cuddle up with it too x

This is normal behaviour with cats. I havnt had a cat myself that has done this but it is because they feel content and comforted and it reminds them of being wit their mum which is a happy time for them My wee boy kneads me all the time...quite painful if he gets a sensitive patch of skin lol but its nothing to worry about

Welcome to the forum. Sylvester is remembering being with his Mum, it is a comfort to him. One of my cats, Blackberry, does this to the throw on our sofa when she is lying next to me. I think it is so cute.

Thanks for all the advice! That's kind of cute that my dressing gown reminds Sylvester of his mum!

Welcome to the forum ais1978, I can't add anything to what the others have said, only to say that our cats still paddy paw (knead) in fact I recently posted a thread on one occasion yourpetforums.co.uk/thread/5753/roman-softie about our 10 year old big ginger boy. They're aged between 5 & 15 so they never forget how to do it although they don't tend to do the suckling part.

My youngster (15 months) Lily still paddles her paws against me, purrs like a wee moped and drools rather than sucks I find it really sweet Sylvester obviously feels content and safe with you as his new Mum so I would certainly not discourage it - it's one of the sweetest things about cats My two older girls still do it to a certain extent....Chilli (2yo, ex-feral) paddles her paws when I stroke and talk to her and Hattie (12yo+?) does it on my bare arms when she jumps up for a cuddle

Many do this when split from their Mum too young, but some do it even without it. My girl Skye is 3 and still does this to me for hours if I let her. My dressing gown is her favourite but even if I'm wearing a regular jumper she will do it! She used to suck me too, then I'd end up soaking. So I started saying 'No suckies' and she's mostly out of that habit, but if she's really tired she'll still do it. The massage I can deal with though

Hahaha scallywag I had never seen a dog do it before I saw that video!! ais1978 as the others have said, this is totally normal behaviour for cats. Apparently they do it when very happy and comfortable as it is like suckling from the mother (They knead then to help stimulate more milk). My cat Bramble used to do this all the time, mostly on a particular cover I have that my two cats here won't even snuggle up on, but also on my dressing gowns and normal duvets too. All of my cats knead but only Bramble has done the suckling thing. It sounds so funny when she does it haha.

I have a certain VERY soft jumper which Lily cannot resist kneading against whenever she comes into contact with it I actually used it as a bed for her for a few days when she was spayed as we wanted her to have a REALLY soft comfortable bed
