Ebony's highly dependent on my company since Tom passed away at the vets on Friday and she gets worried even if I go out for 10 minutes like she thinks I'm not coming back. She loves other cats and when Tom was alive she used to mother him like she would a kitten, would it be too soon to get her another friend next week?

It does seem that Ebony is a very social cat (not like our 4) or was it just Tom she liked and is just missing him specifically. Its a difficult one knowing when to get (or not) another cat. Of course she doesn't know that Tom has died (I presume) & just thinks he went out with you & never came back so she will be wondering what has happened & hence her need to know that you're not leaving her. How old is Ebony? An old cat may not appreciate a kitten added into the family (too lively) but then she might like to mother it as she did Tom. If she's not old then its a different matter. I would give it a couple of weeks to allow you & (humanising cat reactions a bit here) her to grieve/miss him, unless there is a cat that really catches your eye.

Ebony's about 3 or 4, Tom was 11 so obviously they weren't mother and kitten even though Ebony behaved like Tom's mother, I saw Ebony interacting with other cats in rescue and she basically mothers anything furry that allows her to.

I think it is a good idea to get another cat or kitten to help poor Ebony, especially as she is a cat that mothers any other cat - it will certainly help her. It is so sad when one cat dies and the other one is pining for it - they don't understand and just think it is missing. Have you contacted a rescue centre yet? Good luck in finding a new kitty.

I've contacted Cats Protection (I'm already down as an emergency fosterer for them) and although they have no one suitable yet they're keeping an eye out. I'm also going to go to RSPCA next week with any luck to meet a cat there I hope.

Perhaps pop in to see Linda at her shop in Amble (on Church Street) and she may be able to help you with a suitable cat (I know she has two lovely boys at her house who are looking for homes) or she may know of one who's pretty easy going and will suit Ebony Tell her Gill sent you She's THE loveliest woman you could ever meet and 100% cat mad (she started PARRT over 30 years ago)
