I will have to check Alfies record to see what he actually has. I'm not saying I won't get him vacc'd but it makes you think more about it! I don't know anywhere near enough to make that sort of decision.

That's the one alfiemummy ! Thanks. Well I know before the pet passports, they just got a certificate of health, and you can still use something like that for some bits so perhaps a titre test would be enough? I doubt it, but can't hurt to ask the vet anyway. She can get around the Schengen zone without the vacs anyway, and I guess keeping her out the UK & Ireland would be worth it if it meant that she didn't have to risk the dangers of being vaccinated yearly. I mean I read that dogs are actually more immune to diseases when there is longer time between vaccinations, and until relatively recent years dongs weren't generally vaccinations weren't yearly anyway. I think some are meant to be every three years and some every seven. Actually, when I was doing animal care at college, we got taught that vaccinations were needed only every three to seven years and that they are done every year because a vet needs to see a patient at least once a year to be able to administer drugs. So for example I couldn't go to my vet in Scotland and get a decent wormer for Smudgie if they hadn't seen her for over a year, they'd technically have to see her first before giving me a drug to take away with me. I guess it's more of an issue for pets on long term prescribed medication, but then surely they'd have at least a yearly check up anyway to make sure it was working etc. In any case, seemed like a pretty rubbish reason to be getting people to vaccinate more often than is apparently necessary. scallywag I'm sure a kennels would accept a titre test results thing as it shows the immunities (basically that he is vaccinated), although I suppose not all would if they don't know about it.

I don't know anywhere near enough to make that sort of decision. Maybe try the titre testing thing then so you can see how protected he actually is? Sure I saw a post by Roo about this on Facebook when I still had an FB and she seemed to know a lot about it. Any input Roo?

I don't think about it. Dogs go to kennels so need up to date vax. Never had any problems,so why worry. Without the vaccines the world would be a worse place. So, one must accept the odd casualty.

I think I've read about the titre results not being reliable or conclusive or something similar. Was it on this forum? Smokeybear springs to mind.....

Thanks Roo ! Not sure I'd completely not vaccinate but certainly would like to do it less often where possible if it's the best for my pets.

Each to their own, I think part of it is because vets have been saying how important it is for god knows how long and this new information can be a little frightening! I just always think 'Well how can you lose immunity after a year?!' :-P ETA - a vaccine lasts 8-15 years, which shows that you only really need to do it once in a lifetime.
