Took my dog back to vets this morning. They have sedated him and took him into theatre. Apprently they have cleaned and packed it doesn't look any different to me. They have stopped his Amoxicillin tablets and gave him cephalexin aswell as a steroid but if he vomits or gets the runs we have to stop and phone vet back. Have an appointment for Friday morning which is just a review as I had to phone up when we got home as I was confused but when we was there the vet said if Friday it is no better he will need another operation. I'm really sad I don't see why they keep pumping him with antibiotics when nothing is working this is his 3rd lot now. It just seems cruel to keep him in this sort of pain. Not prescribed anymore painkillers and obviously it's hurting more cos the vet has been messing. At my wits end now. Just don't understand why they want to leave him so long before they decide to do surgery again it's literally like a a football between his legs.

The antibiotics they gave him last week we're apprently really strong and only took 13 hours to kick in. Yes give with food so we have done struggling to get much down him tho he usually loves his food but just not bothered at moment. They didn't say anything about pain relief they kinda changed subject when it was mentioned. I suppose tablet may put pressure on his heart he's had that many over last 8 days

At least they have cleaned the op wound again and they will need to see if that, along with the new antibiotics will have an effect. Hope all goes well

Sorry to hear that things are still not going well.
Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but in cases where antibiotics are not having desired results, then can't they test the infected area (by taking sample) to then send off for analysis to then find out which antibiotic will work? I think I would be asking the vet if this was an option.
Three different lots of antibiotics in a week sounds like a lot of changes!! My experience of antibiotics (even when started by an injection to kick start the process) takes ~ 3 days to see any difference.
The other thing is, how safe is it to knock him out again? That would be like three lots of those kind of drugs in a week and a half!!
You mention heart in your last post, does he have a heart issue?

Hi again. My dogs been on cephalexin tablets now and he's finished them. The vets only gave him 2 days worth. Not any change on his scrotum still swelled and looks yellow still very big compared to what it should look like. He's back tommorow at vets at 9.30 got to starve him tonight. Hoping they do surgery tommorow as don't fancy been given a 4th lot of antibiotics and steroids that are just not working. Can't keep leaving it this long before long it could get into his blood stream. He's still not his self. He will eat and drink but not a great deal.

Also no heart issue. Just cos he's such a big dog. All these tablets n anesthetic and sedatives could be putting pressure on it .

Sorry to hear the latest antibiotics don't seem to be having any noticeable effect. Hope all goes well at the vets tomorrow & they can do something to finally solve the problem.

What an awful time you are having raexox! Those vets sound awful and uncaring, they seem to be dragging their heels over your poor dogs care, and seem not to be explaining things properly to you.The bad smell is certainly a sign of something not being right, and the vet should be investigating and sorting out the cause pretty damn quick, you must be at your wits end worrying, can you get a second opinion? Can dogs be allergic to penicillin in the same way as humans? (After taking Amoxycillin which caused awful reaction,I am now allergic to penicillin) I remember one of my dogs being allergic to something in a vaccination and his face swelling like a hippopotomus, but your poor dogs problem definitely sounds like an infection of some sort.Hope your dogs problems are soon resolved and he is soon back to his normal self. Then ask around other dog owners to find a decent vet.

Hey, if I were you I'd go to a new vets and get a second opinion. If your dog needs an operation, get the new vets to do it, and if they find that the problem was caused by a mistake made by the first vets, then considering the first vets' reluctance to actually do anything to help the poor dog, I'd forward them the bill and the proof from the second vet as to how the operation was needed due to the failings of the first vet. I'd normally let that kind of thing pass, people make mistakes, but the rudeness of the first vet and their reluctance to actually do anything to help your dog or accept that there is something wrong would prompt me to do so, haha.
Hope your dog is better soon, sorry you have to go through this.

Hi all. Went back Thursday they gave him more cephalexin. Got to take him back Monday and starve him again. Scrotum looks abit smaller and not smelling as much bit still very red and looks like fungal on it. I still think it needs removing. As it's not as it should be. Have to see what happens Monday now

Your poor dog.
Are the vets listening to your concerns? Are they explaining why they're doing what they're doing? Are you happy with their explanation?
