Hi. Don't normally do this but could really do with some advice. My 4 yr old St bernard went in for a castration and a testicle removed that hadn't dropped down removed too. He had this done 6 days ago. Had to go back to the vet on Thursday who said the wound was infected as his scrotum swelled and was very red and he kept licking it even though we stopped him all the time and even took shifts through the night. The antibiotics and painkillers were not working. Went back today for an emergency appointment as he's not going for a wee very much still in a lot of pain and won't stand up to eat will only sit down. Thought he may have possible urine infection. Also his scrotum area smells like rotting flesh it is a very keen smell and it's getting worse as house go by. Vet gave him some stronger antibiotics today but no more painkillers. Told us to come back tuesday for him to be sedated to be looked at properly as he wasn't comfortable with the vet we saw today who was very rude. I'm Confused and very worried as to what Tuesday will entail, feel like we are getting no where and there is no signs of improvement. Advice would be much appreciated. Thanks

No wonder you are worried. I recommend that you phone the vet again in the morning and tell them you are very worried about your dog being in pain but if you are really worried and think he is getting much worse phone the emergency vet service for advice - very costly if you have to take him there but worth it.

Sorry to hear your dog is in pain. But why did you allow him to lick himself at all? Were you not told he must NOT lick his wound? Did the vet not supply an elizabethan or comfy collar?
Is he weeing better since your vet visit?
If things are getting worse by the hour, I would phone the emergency vets for advice. Very possibly they will want to see him and this will be very expensive. I would imagine £150 for consultation, depending where you live. However leaving longer could be more expensive in the long run. Is your dog insured?

No we were not supplied with any collar. We went out and bought one ourselves which has not stopped him much. Iv done everything I can for my dog so don't appreciate someone say why did I let him lick it at all we have done all we can. I have a little one who I need to see to and we all doing shifts through the night. He's not crying out in pain as much and he's sleeping a little better but the vet today was scared of my dog cos of his size and my dog picked up on it and wouldn't let him come near him so just prescribed stronger antibiotics and it was emergency vets we saw as it's Sunday. Just worried about the horrid smell or is that normal if there is infection there? There was only one vet on today so he couldn't be seen by anyone else. We keep taking him outside on his lead for a wee so we do make sure he's no busting but he won't go in the garden like he normal does to wee and he's not begging me for food like normal but when I provide it he will eat it. He's very quiet and not his normal self he's usually quite a lively character. But he's just sitting or laying down been quiet.

The horrid smell is not normal.
If he is weeing, then I would leave things till the morning but then defifnitely see a vet. Hopefully the stronger antibiotics are taking effect, helping to relax a bit from the pain.
Hope the vet tomorrow will sort him out.
Good night

Morning raexox just catching up on forum, sympathize with you, it is hard to be 24/7 keeping eye on pet, I am in that position at the mo, but thankfully over the worst. Personally I would get straight down to the vets today, and see the one who carried out the operation, it's always difficult seeing someone else other than ! How was your night ? How is he this morning

He's not too bad. He's eaten his breakfast with his tablets in had to feed it him while he was sat down as won't go outside to eat. But he's laid out now and the smell is horrid still. His scrotum is very enlarged still probs 2 tennis balls together size. It's a horrible situation cos this is second lot of antibiotics and there not doing anything starting to think he needs another operation maybe to remove the scrotum completely

I would in the very least pick up the phone to your vet who did the op, please... he may be suffering

Just wanted to say sorry to hear that your dogs having a rough time after his operation.
I think from what you have described (bad smell, very swollen area, known infection) I think I would be requesting a follow up appointment as a post operation check. The vet I use does not charge consultation for these appointments. They prefer people to come back early and stop further issues than let something develop causing a larger issue in long term. However obviously drugs or additional tests would be chargeable.
edit: Another thing, is the cone of shame you have longer than the dogs face? If the nose sticks out of the end of the cone then it will not stop dog reaching around to lick area in question.

He is back at the vets tommorow at half past 9 in the morning he had his operation 7 days ago and we've been back 3 times in a week. Phoned vets today and they just want to leave it while tomoz. I have to starve him tonight for him to be sedated or put under for them to have a close look. As it's hurting him cos when you go near it to clean it he runs off or starts growling. It's a comfy collar he's got. There wasn't a big enough cone to fit him
