A couple of weeks ago I had a feeling that Roman was not quite sound on his hind legs but couldn't be certain (his heel markings make his gait look odd from the rear!) but it only lasted a couple of days. But at the end of that week he was no longer jumping up as much for his meals. (We feed all but Penny on the worktops as she's on a strict diet to keep the weight off & she cant get at the food there).
So Tuesday last week we took Roman to the vet who couldn't find anything wrong (other than the possibility of the start of arthritis) - he had full mobility in his hind legs, was chilled out on the table & being manipulated, no sign of pain. In fact when the vet put him on the floor to see him walk - he didn't oblige & then jumped back on to the table!!! So it was just a case of keep an eye on Roman. I'd also taken Penny for her 6 monthly meds checkup & for her claws to be clipped. She made the most noise when her claws were clipped - there were a few smiles in the waiting room when we came out!!!
That night Roman came in & eventually jumped up & as he landed his right hind was completely tucked up (think of the shape of a trussed chicken leg!) & Roman was twitching it try & release what was obviously a locked muscle/joint. He immediately jumped down & was a bit unstable for a few seconds. So immediately kept him in & the next day made an appointment for the Thursday morning for Roman at the vets.
We saw a different vet this time who manipulated him differently. The first had done each leg individually when Roman was laid down on his side, this one did it more with both legs together with Roman more on his chest. Roman was not impressed & was grumbling. The vet said he was obviously in some discomfort! He also said that the locked leg was a bit unusual. Still no idea of what exactly was wrong though. So Metacam for 5 days & of course continue to keep him in. On the hot weather days we had to move him between rooms depending on the temperature. As our other cats can come & go through the catflap he had to be kept separate
He finished the Metacam on Monday night but still not jumping up any real height or at least very rarely. So took him back to the vets this evening. I was expecting to see the 2nd vet but it was the 1st one ( their a vet down so were swapping surgeries around. However with all the information now available this vet was able to find a bit of looseness on Roman's right patella (kneecap) & a very slight stiffness on his left hind. As he said the looseness could be normal for Roman as it caries from cat to cat but it could be the cause as the locking ( I can sympathise as my fingers can lock in strange positions! )
So back on the Metacam for 5 days & to be kept in - just in time for the heatwave!!!! He's also been referred to the head vet, we've got an appointment at 9 a.m. on Friday.
Roman's not too impressed & I wouldn't be surprised if he's not jumping as a form of protest as he's being fed on the floor in his "prison". So far he's been kept in for 8 days!
Those on the old YC forum may well remember Roman's period of incarceration which landed up with cage rest while they tried to find out why he was limping badly, followed by an op which found an inflamed tendon sheath & then more cage rest while it healed & then another week indoors - he was incarcerated from 1st June to 17th July 2012! I hope this isn't going to be a repeat!!
