Taken Osiris to the vets this morning. Noticed last night that his left hind foot seemed to be bending a bit more at his toes than I thought was normal & definitely more than his right. He didn't seem too bothered by my touching it so thought I might be imagining it or markings had given an odd impression.
I had a very late night last night (another story) & when I went to bed at 6:00 a.m. he was fast asleep on our bed & I had to squeeze on the edge of the bed - he was disinclined to move - as a result I've got a stiff back today. He also didn't really want to move this morning but came down for breakfast, neither of us saw him get off the bed or go down the stairs but he stopped on the last stair & stayed for a few minutes do I picked him up & carried him on to the work top & his food to discover he was holding his left hind off the off the ground & not too interested in food. So shut him in & vet appointment made for 11:25.
Vet couldn't find anything broken (my concern) or any sign of damage but his lymph node was swollen, indicating an infection. Thinks he might have been in a fight & got bitten or scratched although no wound visible despite a good search. So injections today & Antirobe antibiotics (capsules twice a day) & Metacam for 5 days starting tomorrow. Should not be fun as giving him anything by mouth is a nightmare & recently he's been very fussy about his food - leaving it if he doesn't like it on a particular day even if he's hungry! He doesn't like cat treats of any variety (including the more liquid style), difficult to hide powders in fresh chicken ( forget adding gravy!) Hope I've got enough of the right flavour Applaws/Encore to put them in. Need to get some Sainsbury's small packs of wafer thin ham & chicken (they work out better than Asda/Tesco as its 2 for £1 and don't waste as much as the slightly larger & dearer based on use by date.
If no sign of improvement by Monday we're to go back. Of course he'll have to be kept in (he hates that or using a litter tray, it must be pristine!) - not the best option for him, us or Roman but needs must. Catching Roman at night will be fun as these days he sleeps most of the day & goes out around teatime & doesn't come back until sometime in the early hours. Heard him twice whilst I was up last night & was finally in between 8 & 10 a.m.
Poor boy, typical he does something that needs to keep him in when the weather's better!

Oh dear toni if it's not one then seems to be the other, guess when there are so many pets in a home it will look like that to us one pet owners How is he since this morning, or is he having complete bed rest so to speak ? Hope it's nothing serious. Hope you get a better nights sleep tonight. What was so interesting to keep you up till 6am ? you can't blame the forum Big {{{HUGS}}} to you.

Thanks scallywag, he wants out but his paw is definitely sore - can put weight on it when he walks but wary of it being touched now - hissing & pulling away which he wasn't this morning, amazingly the vet could manipulate his leg & foot with no trouble. its not bed/cage rest but to keep him from getting into any other trouble, giving meds & keeping an eye on it. Just hope its not a repeat of Roman almost exactly 2 years ago. 30/4/2012 he had a bad hind leg - deep wound (probably cat bite) which involved being kept in for at least a week - it healed fine but a bit longer than a week, but on 8/6/12 he was back at vets as he was limping badly again (he was walking on 3 legs). This time he didn't recover with rest so back to vets on 18/6/12 - 1 week cage rest - the old YC members will remember this - there are pictures to prove his displeasure with 2 sizes of cage he landed up on 3rd size from PAH give room for bed & litter tray & food/water as well as him - he sprawls (not quite the restriction the vet wanted as with size in width & depth comes height so he could rear up on his legs if he wanted but didn't after the 1st 2 days!). This was then supposed to be followed by 1 week of house arrest but he didn't improve so back to vets on 26/6/12 & they operated to investigate (after x-rays didn't show anything) on 28/6/12 & found his tendon was inflamed inside its sheath so they opened it , cleaned it out & stitched him up again. Cage rest again this time with buster collar! Changed to house arrest on 9/7/12 & finally allowed fully out on 17/7/2012!! So 3 weeks of cage rest but over a month continuously kept in - thank goodness he is placid - Osiris isn't so much. We still have the cage if it turns out to be necessary - I really hope not! As to what kept me up I with transferring was playing with possible solutions with transferring some specific info from my old phone to my new one! - Once I get stuck in on IT type things I don't give up sometimes to the detriment of sleep!!

Oh dear toni if it's not one then seems to be the other, guess when there are so many pets in a home it will look like that to us one pet owners Yeah, the more you have the more you become on first name terms with your vet When Neil and I were fostering the old cats we were once at the vet every day Monday to Thursday, once with two cats!!! Twice with epileptic Nina, once with Thomas who was producing blood in his poo and twice with feisty tortie Misty who had an eye ulcer (which later burst and meant her eye was removed...at 17 years old!!!) All day Friday I was feeling as though there was 'something' I'd forgotten to do Fingers crossed for Osiris and hope the antibiotics do their job (((HUGS))) And hope he's not a Typical Cat when it comes to taking his medicine!!!! He couldn't have stood on a thorn and have it embedded in his paw, could he? Would that cause a bit of heat or infection?

Thanks @gillykat, I suspect the vet is right as to the cause as I found a little gunky bit of fur on his neck this afternoon - it had obviously been wet & stuck together (but not in a position to have come from a water bowl or dribble etc.) so suspect a fight or at least a debate! There's no sign of heat or swelling other than his lymph gland. Yes he is a typical cat re meds etc. probably even to extreme. I know what you mean about being on first name terms with the vets & them knowing you & which are your pets. Without even checking he said "you've got Metacam already haven't you" - I do its for Penny. At least I provided him a laugh today as Osiris has a tendency to stretch his hind leg & then shakes the lower part & I described it to him as something we regularly see, demonstrating with my leg. He smiled & asked me to repeat it - I obliged! I apparently made his day as he laughed - one for anecdote book I think!

Oh dear, I hope Osiris is feeling better soon. when we have to give ours any meds, it take the two of us. One to hold them, and one to get the meds into they're mouth and make them swallow. Not ideal I know, but there is no chance of putting it in any food as neither will eat anything that looks or smells different.

Thanks, we use that technique too cazypops if we have to. Osiris & Penny are dreadful, first to catch if theythink they're going to get meds & then wriggling & scratching, even wrapped in a towel. Penny's claws are needle sharp but we get them clipped regularly. However we use the food technique for me as she has powders & Metacam every day! Osiris is lethal - he doesn't have nice fine cat claws they are like eagle talons & he knows how to use them! So just hoping I an get this lot into him in food otherwise its going to be fun!

Aww, hope he gets better quickly! Good luck with the medication haha. My cat Smudgie LOVES tablets, if I hold one in my hand she just quickly eats it up and looks for more. Bramble is a nightmare though, very good at spitting them out and even if she's seemingly swallowed and we've held her a while to check, when put down she immediately sneaks off and I find the tablet later! Thankfully I've never had to give Carlotta or Mieze one, I imagine they'll be in Brambles category, and Mieze could be really vicious I think - she's bad enough getting spot-on!
Keep us updated on how he's doing anyway!

Being Osiris! - Not happy at being kept in. Still a bit wary of the paw/leg Got the 1st powders of the day in him - a little chicken applaws particularly with the liquid & it mixed in a treat & with a bit of persuasion (called chopped human chicken mixed in at least twice!) to make him finish it. It's been muggy today so not ideal for him to be kept in as can't open the windows too far. Of course he's been funny about the litter tray as usual. We made an absolutely pristine litter tray for him yesterday & when we let him out in the house for the night (all the others were shut in as well) it still hadn't been used, so moved it upstairs to the bathroom (as he was sleeping upstairs) & it was still pristine this morning. All came downstairs for food & whilst I was preparing it OH brought the clean litter tray down ready for Osiris's incarceration. When all was ready we looked for Osiris & he'd vanished - eventually found him coming downstairs again. Put Osiris in the isolation area & fed the cats & when we went upstairs found out why he'd been there. Well he knew there had been a litter tray in the bathroom & just because it wasn't there it didn't make a difference (even though there was one just along the corridor) he used the floor (carpeted!) Normally he uses the bath if he doesn't like a litter tray so his paw must still be hurting & he didn't want to jump in & out. So a little kitchen paper towel later it was mopped up - the floor boards & both sides of the carpet, sprayed with stain & odour remover & left to work. Mopped up again after a while & all back in place. The litter tray is still pristine even now. He is a stubborn cat but some time or other he's got to relieve his bowels (at least that is always in a litter tray - I hope that's not famous last words!!!!) - we at least know his bladder etc. is working!!! Oh the joys of owning a cat like Osiris - but we wouldn't be without him.

Oh & should add of course Roman wasn't happy about being kept in overnight (but was good about it) so he went out after his breakfast & we haven't seen him since! Not worried, although will go looking for him around 8:30 pm as will need to keep him in again overnight so Osiris can have the run of the house.
Lexie's not impressed with being kept out of the isolation area (dining-room & conservatory combination) especially if I'm in there with Osiris. Penny only complains occasionally as she's mainly upstairs.

Osiris is doing fine thanks smilesbetter. Taking his meds in his food, sometimes eating it stratight away on in a ha sandwich - cat food (+ meds) wrapped in pieces of wafer thin ham!! He's going loopy when he first gets the run of the house at night. Anyone & anything is fair game to vent his feelings on! but eventually settles. Will see how he walks & stands in the morning & although he still has 2 days of meds I might let him out if he's OK. Don't think the other local cats are going to be happy as I suspect he will be reasserting himself!
