Hi all, my puppy will be 10 weeks old tomorrow and she came home to us 2 weeks ago. She is lively, great temperament and quick to learn and 99% of the time she is house trained, so we are very lucky and have been patting ourselves on the back for such a quick and happy transition from her siblings to us. At night she sleeps in her crate and bed and, I thought, was quite happy, but I have noticed for about a week that her muzzle and legs are constantly wet (not urine) but put it down to playing in the dewy grass and drinking messily as she is a bit of a tom boy. But yesterday when I went to tidy up her bed I noticed that it was very damp all round the sides. I have now read an article in this month's Your Dog about separation problems and one of the stress symptoms is salivating. Has anyone else had this problem and, if so, how did you solve it. I am at a complete loss about this because it must be excessive salivating as she is saturated under her chin and on her legs. I have always had rescue dogs never a puppy or a female. Help !!

Hi cazzajane42 welcome to the forum. I don't have any advice as never had a pup but Im sure I read on the yourpet forum about how to make a puppy happier after separation. Off to look and back in a tick Well I have been on there but they have changed the layout yet again and now I can't find the info but I am sure I read something about separation and how to help the puppy, like a snuggly fleece and a radio on at night very low. Your Pet don't suppose you can remember where you moved it too ? Maybe its been removed now ?

Hi Scallywag, many thanks for replying so quickly. She has a soft fleece but the radio sounds like a good idea so I'll try that. Bella is also drinking a lot and seems to do lots of wees but after a long one she squats and does like a pea size drop (no pun intended there). I am taking her to the vets tomorrow for her 2nd vaccination but I think I'll try to get her in today. Apart from this Bella is a lively little thing with a good appetite.

She sounds adorable, any photo's ( ha ha no pressure ) have you been onto the yourpet site and read about owning a new puppy, that's where I thought I saw what I was looking for . Tagged your pet but they don't always have time to respond.

What sort of food is she on? I would certainty mention the drinking and peeing to the vet. Can you measure her water intake? The vet should be able to work out what normal water intake is, based on the type of food, her age and activity level. And the ambient temperature. Has been fairly warm recently. I would keep taking her outside no less than every 2 hours and wait for her to go.
The second pee, I believe, is not abnormal.
Is there any discomfort when she is peeing? Any blood? Offensive smell? Hope the problem is caused by nothing more serious than the warm weather and incomplete house training. She is still very young.

Hi Zahada, I'm giving her dry food, approx. 30g, with 2 big teaspoons of meat for puppies. She has a good appetite eating most of it but grazing the rest for an hour or so. No discomfort or anxiety when she wees just bounds away to play after squatting. I've been speaking to another Bishon owner and she says that her dog constantly has a wet chin and says it is a trait they seem to have - I will still mention it to the vet though to put my own mind at ease. The only smell she has is of wet dog LOL but she loves it when I rub her throat to towel dry it. I realise she is still very young, 10 weeks old today in fact. Seeing vet later so will get back.

Hi Scallywag, I'm going to TRY to add a photo of Bella - wish me luck !

Hi cazzajane42, welcome to the forum. Sorry we should have told you that you can't load photos using the mechanism you're using. You need to use a hosting service such as photobucket or flickr. We've got a help/faq index which has links to info on posting photos. yourpetforums.co.uk/post/13410/threadDon't hesitate to ask for any help. Hope all went well with the vets today.

I mentioned the excessive salivating to the vet and he looked in Bella's mouth, checked her teeth etc and said all looks okay but we'll keep an eye on it. BUT I am happy to say that it appears to have stopped now and I am sure it's because I took Scallywag's advice about leaving the wireless on when she's left - so simple, thank you. The squatting and not pee-ing is normal but I, somehow, am going to take a sample of her pee to the vet just to check there's no blood etc, although I haven't noticed anything at all but I'd rather get it checked just in case. The vet examined Bella and is happy with her progress so no worries there. I don't know why but I thought girl dogs would have a different temperament to boy dogs because my daughter and my grandson's girl dogs always seem to be fluffy and clean with pink bows etc, but Bella's a real mucky pup and is happiest when digging in the garden and getting dirty, but you have to laugh when she appears looking very innocent but covered in dirt. We should have called her Calamity Jane I think.

Hi, it's me again. Bella is a joy to have and I have now come to grips with most of my worries, i.e. feeding, salivating, fretting. But I noticed this morning that she has been squatting a lot but not actually doing anything. I have been watching her and checking but even though she squats there is no wet patches. About half an hour ago I checked her under carriage and I think she has begun her season BUT she is just under 4 months old so is this too young? She is a Bichon X and has always been the more advanced of the litter of 5 girls.

It's all down to breed, personality and in some ways the way they have been brought up too. Glad i'm not the only one with a permanently filthy puppy haha!

She is a Bichon X and has always been the more advanced of the litter of 5 girls. Smaller dogs tend to start their first season earlier than larger breeds and it's usually between 5 months to two years old that a dog gets her first season, but some can get it earlier no problem so i wouldn't be too concerned about that. However because of the squatting having started at the same time, I'd recommend phoning the vet and asking if it's normal for dogs to do that during their first season, or if it could be a symptom of something else (And whether you should bring her in). As a fellow relatively new puppy owner, I know how you feel haha. Everything that is new with Rosa is completely new to me and I'm kinda dreading her first season!!

Thank you for your reply. I've been looking online and at various doggy sites and they all say that smaller breeds can have their first season quite young and that they urinate more than usual. When Bella's squatted I've felt the grass where she's been (I don't get out much ha ha ha) and it doesn't feel wet, yet I am leaving a pad down and I can see that she is doing dribbles. I will check with the vet though just to put my mind at rest. I took her for a walk to the park yesterday, on a lead, and was completely paranoid about every other dog there that looked her way !! Poor Bella, she loves to run and wasn't too happy about being on a lead albeit one of those extending ones. So Rosa is a tomboy, too! My grandson and my daughter have two of Bella's sisters and they are constantly putting pictures on F/book of fluffy white puppies... Bella's fave toy at the moment is a black plastic flower pot that she stole from my store and it goes everywhere with her, but I really do find her funny and I wouldn't change her for the world, although it would be nice if she didn't insist on digging up my plants LOL
