I would like to start doing agility with Jess, maybe join a club and compete but there are few things I would like to know before I get a bit more serious Is their a set age dogs have to be at or above before joining a club and/or competing? Are most clubs open to cross breeds too? Is their a set age the handler has to be at or above to join a club and/or compete? Do dogs have to be wonderfully behaved to start? Thanks in advance

dogs have to be over 1 year old to start agility training
yes clubs are open to pedigree and non-pedigree
there is no set age for the handler that is why the YKC is there for people under 18
not really as long as they have good recall and are well-behaved with other dogs then it should not matter

Thanks in advance Age to start: over 1 year - course you will need training before competitions! Start training and join a club when your dog is over 1 year of age. Breeds elligiable: all breeds are welcome for agility - of course different breeds have different standards. Age of handler elligiable: I'm sure young'ens can do it - I do!! Behaviour: Dogs must have good recall, and they need to be sorted with their basic obediance before they can start agility. A good agility instructor will see how the handler and dog are together (behaviour, etc) especially if the handler is a young person and the dog is just over the age of 1.

Are most clubs open to cross breeds too?Yep, but be careful you don't join a Border Collie orientated club, you want one that treats all breeds equally. Is their a set age the handler has to be at or above to join a club and/or compete?Nope, I've even heard of six year olds running dogs! Do dogs have to be wonderfully behaved to start? Not at all! They need to be well behaved but not super dogs. I found agility helped Scooby's general obedience and our bond anyway. ^ Answered above Here are a couple of links you might find useful: www.thekennelclub.org.uk/agilitywww.ukagility.com/Downloads/UKARules2013.pdfwww.ukagility.com/WhyUKA.aspxThe last one might not be any good yet, but if you decide to compete, it'll be very helpful! I know it's been answered already but you know me, always the agility nut!

You can start doing base work before you start classes such as 2 on 2 off work and rear end awareness as well as forward focus We did this and taught jasper to wrap poles (no jump included) to get him used to the poles/wings

I wish I could do agility with Amber, because she loves doing it in the garden (I have a few jumps I put up and made a ramp - we also have a tunnel but she won't do that!!!) ...but we don't seem to have any agility clubs near us (we are in Ireland) Otherwise I would be doing agility with her Good luck with Jess though

Warning: It's highly addictive. Once you start, you will probably find you cannot stop. But it's also great fun
