afternoon everyone, we've had problems with munchkin over the last month where she's not been weeing, we took her to the vet who gave an antibiotic jab, after a couple of days she was back to normal, But yesterday and today she had stopped weeing again , so we took her back to the vet, but she saw a different vet who asked us to bring in a urine sample which we did today, he tested it and says she has cystitis, and has given us medicine to give her and we have to change her food to a special urine diet, which costs a fortune but if it makes her better we'll pay for, I had to laugh tho as as the vet was examining her said it was clear she is very stressed and had we considered using feliway at home! I had to put him right so I said to him ofcourse she's stressed she's been put in a box put in a car and ahas been poked by a stranger, she's not like this at home, she's happy! Has anyone elses cat got or had cystitis?

So sorry to hear about Munchkins. I've not had any experience of cystitis although I seem to remember that a member on the old forum (rachel) had a cat (Mo) that suffered from it. I seem to remember that the cat was given Zylkene (stress reliever). I've also heard of Cystease in connection of cyctitis.
Hopefully someone else can give some better advice.

I had nurmerous cases of it before I switched foods. vet recommended Urinary SO food, and it really is expensive for not such good ingredients. They were on it for about 3 years, and one still came down with it twice. On another forum I use someone suggested stopping the food, and switching to a high quality dry, which I did, and you know what, no more cystitis! It's much cheaper as well. They also have one pouch of wet food a night (just Felix).

Cystitis IS caused by stress. Yes a car journey is stressful but there maybe something that has changed subtly at home that Munchkin may have been upset by, be it changing of furniture, a unknown cat outside looking in, more people in the house, even a favourite blanket being moved could cause stress in some cats. My parents late cat had stress issues. To look at her you would think she was as happy as Larry, lazing around all day. She had been a stray and was always very nervous and we never got to the bottom of it before she passed at 10yrs. I sometimes wonder if it was partially due to being overweight and not able to do much. At our Vets we don't give a new food unless it is a really chronic issue. A urinary diet is better for crystals but depends what you've been put on. It is usually a case of antibiotics and rack the brains for any possible causes of stress. Thinking of the more regular clients with this issue it is always another cat but may not be the case for you. Please don't dismiss the stress possibility as it really is the main cause of cystitis.

Thanks Vonnie, nothing has changed at home to cause stress, we do have cats come into our garden, munchkin is an indoor cat, the food seems to be doing the trick thankfully, also we think and so does the vet that she may have already had the problem, as when we got her as a kitten she was riddled with fleas and very bad intestinal worms,

My cat got pretty bad cystitis when he was 2 years old. I am pretty sure it was due to stress. I was about to get married and things got pretty chaotic in my house. Where Casper was used to peace and quiet and his own space, I soon had a house full of guests that flew in for the wedding. The vet prescribed something but it just didn't go away and I was really worried. I ended up buying some capsules online called Cystease and it cleared up completely in like 2 days! I just sprinkled the capsule in his food and he was none the wiser. Really glad it cleared up as there was always blood in his pee in his litterbox so he must have been in pain. I have attached the link. Hope this helps. Good luck. x www.vetimed.co.uk/pet/product/feliway-cystease-x-30/#/-1/

Never heard of the special urine diet :/ My wee boy got cystitis and had stopped peeing but was then while trying to use the little tray leaving droplets of blood so I had freaked out thinking the worst. I got him to the vet and was told it was cystitis and to stop feeding him low quality dry foods. Which I did. Never had a problem again!
