I lost my faithful friend on 7th January 2014 and was heartbroken at 9 years old he was too young to go, I wondered how I could get the memories out of my head and on to paper so that I would never forget him, so I wrote a poem about his life, I hope you enjoy:-)
Our Faithful Friend
You came to us in 2005,
And made our world come alive.
It was from that day that we knew,
We had found a faithful friend in you.
You may be gone but we’ll never forget,
That very first day that we met.
You were mad as a hatter and we’d in the fire,
And from that point you were our hearts desire.
Your feet were big and your eyelashes long,
You licked our feet with your big wet tongue.
You looked at us with your big brown eyes,
“Guess what I’ve done” Surprise.
You pinched the washing whilst we were hanging it out,
And you ran off with anything that we left lying about.
You were always looking for mischievous things to do,
Because you always knew you would get a chew.
You pinched everyone’s tissues out of their pocket,
And before they knew it you were off like a rocket.
It didn’t matter if they were big or small,
You didn’t just chew them, you ate them all.
You ate toadstools & daffodils & made yourself sick,
But you didn’t do it again, you learnt pretty quick.
You heard everything we said, except the word “No”,
“Stop it”, “behave”, “leave it” or “let go”.
As for walks well what can I say?
You wanted to go, but always your own way.
If you didn’t like where you were going you’d flop,
Whether you were in the middle of the road or at the bus stop.
You lay on the decking in the blazing hot sun,
And you wouldn’t move until you were done.
Then you’d start panting & wonder why,
For as long as you lay there it’s a wonder you didn’t fry.
You greeted everyone as they came through the door,
And even after all the attention you always wanted more.
Wherever we sat, on the settee or the chair,
You would sit with us, you were always there.
When it was time for people to get up and go,
You grabbed their clothes as if to say “No”.
We always knew what you were trying to say,
You couldn’t talk but you had your own way.
You were one of a kind that’s for sure,
And we couldn’t have loved you anymore.
You snuggled with us & accepted our tears,
With you in our lives we had so many happy years.
You will always be with us our faithful friend,
Our hearts maybe breaking, but in time they will mend.
You filled our hearts with such love and joy,
Goodnight, sleeptight our little boy.
“For Harvey (our beloved dog) who fell asleep on 7th January 2014”
And made our world come alive.
