Wow! what a super forum with some lovely people. Thanks for all your ideas, suggestions etc. We have come to the conclusion that our Springer has decided after all these years that he should be sleeping with us, upstairs during the night! there is a possibility that something may have spooked him as many of you said. There has been plenty of scent marking going on in our garden which would suggest that maybe he has seen something/someone in the garden during the night (more than likely foxes)
As I said this is totally out of character for him, his/our routine etc. is totally unchanged thus making it difficult to identify the problem easily. So we are continuing with things as normal but when the night barking begins we let him come upstairs (not ideal as he insists on sleeping on the bed!) he settles straight away with out any further 'problems' for the rest of the night.
Hopefully we can get back to how things used to be! I will keep you posted as to the eventual outcome but once again thank you all so much for your help it has been very much appreciated, Bea x

Can you supply him a real comfy bed and insist he settles there rather than your bed if you don't want him on the bed?
You could provide an old T-shirt or similar with your scent on (wear during evening before going to bed) to help him settle where you want him to (after-all bed will nicely smell of you and therefore is possibly a comfort to him)
I cant talk I go to bed dog-less (as they have an old sofa, dog bed and sheepskin rug to choose from other than the bed) and usually wake up with one or other and sometimes both on it!!

Like other people suggested it could be something he has heard in the night that has disturbed him. Other than that maybe he doesn't want to be alone..Woody will let himself into my room if he knows I'm there sometimes so he isn't alone downstairs. Also you could try taking him for longer walks or playing with him a bit longer as this might tire him out more so he will be more likely to sleep at night. If he continues to do this then I would suggest something like Adaptil it's a pheromone diffuser that has a calming effect so it might help him sleep better at night.
