I'm sure it was in YD a few months back that Cod Liver Oil isn't too good for dogs livers. It was typically after I'd just bought a massive tub of Dorwest CLO -.- Apparently salmon oil is better but I haven't tried it yet... CLO contains a lot of vitamin A and D. When there is an excess though because it is fat soluble it is stored in the liver which can have the same effects as alcohol, roughly speaking. Salmon oil, or any fish body oil, has all the benefits of CLO, and more omega 3's but with none of the downsides. Yes, vitamin e should be added if you give a FBO as it depletes it. Coconut oil is also great for skin, coat, joints and digestion. You do not need to supplement further with coconut oil like FBO www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com/the-health-benefits-of-coconut-oil/Tillytubbie, regarding the limp, if its still there you could always try some little stretches. Whenever Oscar gets a limp I usually massage it and do some gentle stretches on the leg, usually helps but he doesn't limp to often (obviously)

PP, Be careful with the amount of supplementation. Only you and your family can judge what is the right amount. Supplements can also do harm as well as good!! I have given a number of products before but I rotate so that I don't give too much of anything in one go. Using your list above you could give CLO one day, EPO another and Salmon oil another. I have heard from the YD magazine and the old forum that CLO is not really ideal. It contains fat soluble vitamins A and D so you have to be careful not to give too much. Fat soluble vitamins can build up in the body unlike water soluble ones which will just be disposed of. As Bextull says if you are giving pure fish oil product (not blended with added vitamins etc)then you need to consider a vitamin E supplement. Depends how much he gets from his normal food (see what your food packet says). I can not remember the reason behind this now. I fell into this trap. I was giving fish4dogs and this came to my attention. When I questioned it with company they told me to give vitamin E as well as the salmon oil. EDIT: oops didn't see page two of replays, sorry guys!!

he does not get CLO everyday only when he gets his glucosamine, which has beenstopped for the moment as he is not limping and is not showing any signs of stiffness

Has anyone tried Cortaflex? I've heard really good reviews of it. Someone said it increased her dog's mobility so much, it was like 'doggy cocaine' lol

Ah thanks bex and Caz Must say jasper seems ok and hasn't had the CLO for around half a year. Don't even know why it's still in the cupboard. He's been ok recently but prevention is better than cure! We have loads of salmon oil but its getting him to eat the bloody thing. Might have a look at Coconut oil And PP, is the EPO essential in his food? Doreen Paige do a brilliant herbal EPO grooming spray that seems to work wonders for the coat. I prefer not to have to put anymore into my dog than is completely necessary lol

I have been looking at the yumega as well, gladys: as you feed cooper yumega plus does it say on the bottle how much barley would need he is 40kg? My bottle of Yumega Plus which is 250ml in size says "Very Large Breeds (over 30kg) daily recommendations = 10 - 15ml. HaHa, whichis quite a lot compared to Coopers 2.5ml. From the website I posted a link to earlier the bottle costs £9.99.

Yeah and it has salmon oil and Vit E in so you wouldn't have to add anything else.

Like Caz said, (think it was caz) supplements can do bad as well as good PP, so just be careful I could mirror Caz's post
