Anyone seen this is the new march YD?
It's really interesting as some of the things there apply to my own dog... It got me thinking.

I browsed overbuy but haven't read it properly yet. It looked quite interesting though.
The 'dogs don't stray far from their owners on walks'. I don't understand completely. If your dog doesn't stray he's too needy? If he goes off into the distance you have little control and little bond? Where's the neutral area? Jasper doesn't stray far because I've taught him to check in with me and he's learned that being near to me makes good things happen. I like him to have fun, but I don't want him taking off too far ahead...

I think it means that I'd your dog doesn't story far from you whilst on walks and on a long lead, they are more dependant on you.

I didn't understand that either Charlotte. Neither of my two are stuck to my side on walks, they like to go off for their own little explorations but they don't go miles away and they come back fairly often. But to be honest, the way things are at the moment with all the thefts, I'd rather they stuck close!!

I wonder when these dog thefts are going to stop. I know they can't just stop in an instant but you can hope can't you.

Cooper doesn't go to far away from me on walks but I love it when we go some where new he is excited about a new place to explore but after going ahead for a bit he will stop and turn back and just stand there till I get near to him. Then off he goes trotting ahead again.

What I'm confused about is the fact that if a dog is happy in a new place, and runs off to look, he is classed as dependant?

I wish our Jasper would be a bit more dependant. He goes off to play with every other dog in the park and never gives us a second thought, it can be quick frustrating at times, but we always keep him in sight.

Skip loves to chase after and scare pheasants,he can smell if one is around when he jumps out of the car,or walking along and all is quiet, until he races off and you see the bird fly up squawking,he likes to chase squirrels too.We notice he gives us a quick glance to make sure of where we are, then we hide behind trees from him,he really loves that game too. Skip is VERY attached to my husband, and will dash in to greet him after his early morning walk as though we have been gone for hours.

Thanks for the welcome BT, yes Jasper is certainly socialized alright, until he finds a fresh mole hill then he's the most unsocial mut you'll come across, ha! But then he is a Terrier, and only 9 months old.

Mole hills must have a very strong scent,Skip won't leave them alone until he has investigated them.He even managed to carry a mole in his mouth to us once,it was still alive, but goodness knows how he managed it.They are only tiny, and sooo pretty. We quickly put it back, hope it survived and didn't die of fright.

Pepper likes to dive on mole hills and make a right mess. She's never found a mole though - Skip must have been very lucky (sort of) Migsy! The only mole I've ever seen was a dead one earlier this year, but it was such a beautiful little thing. I could only assume it had frozen to death as there wasn't a mark on it, but it was freezing cold outside.

They made a real mess of our top garden for a few years, loads of the flipping hills, and we tried everything, but nothing worked!Someone lent us some mole traps, but we couldn't use them as we can't bear to kill things. We had to stamp the hills down,or you fall through into the hollows made by the tunnelling.Think we got tired befor the moles though... Hedgehogs have a strong scent too,one of our dogs wouldn't leave them alone,so had to put a bucket over the h.h. until we could get the dog away.

Oh no, I wouldn't have been able to use the traps either. They must be a nuisance to have in your garden though. I think we're lucky in that way as there don't seem to be any moles up where the houses are. I don't think either of my two have ever seen a hedgehog. Pepper possibly has, but I don't think she was that interested in it!
