I have four cats, Herbie black male DSH 12 years old, Poppy ginger/white long haired female 10 years old and I have just bought two Norwegian Forest kittens, Theo white male 3 months and Freya torte female 3 months (not from same litter). My big cats go in and outdoors, kittens are currently inside. I have 2 litter trays in a quiet room and Theo has no problems using them, Freya is another story....she will poo in the tray but has taken to weeing around the house, she will wee in the cat bed, on the bean bag and in the thick pile rug, she has occasionally wee'd in the litter tray which she got praise for, but why wee everywhere else!!! Don't know what to do

Hi cathlee welcome to the forum, sorry can't advise as never had cats in my life, but I am confident someone like tonib lotsofcats gladys cazypops and a good few other regular posters owning cats will help. Note I tagged each one so they will find your thread quickly

Don't know what to do Firstly - what are you using to clean up the accidents? Secondly - I would get few more litter trays in different locations and try different types of cat litter. Thirdly - can you limit her access to the areas where she pees as to break the habit?

Hi cathlee, I had a similar problem with Bandit our she cat when we first moved house. Our poor Jess our old dog we lost 19 months ago, Bandit would use her bed as a giant cat litter. I use to use a solution of Bicarb to wash the bed out and put her blanket in the washing machine on a boil wash. I tried everything to get her to stop and the only thing that did the trick was when we got a cat flap so she could go out in the garden. Is this an option for you? Welcome to the forum. Just another thought, have you thought of trying Feliway or similar, as it could be a sign of stress?

Thank you scallywag..will look forward to seeing what they have to say zahada..im using carpet cleaner, think I may need something stronger, but she doesn't seem to wee in the same place...ive tried two types of litter, she has wee'd in the tray with both types of litter. Freya is limited to rooms, we live on three floors and when we are in just has access to the room with the trays, the landing and the living room, when its bed time they just have access to the landings and trays.. think she is just naughty, she is very hyper and I think she just gets herself that worked up she wee's

If not you'll get spotlessly clean carpet that still smells of cat pee.... How much do you play with her?

At the mo both are only babies and not due for their operation so Im keeping them in until they have been done....I do want them to go out eventually as they will have the run of woodlands at the back of my house which I know they will love...
can you recommend a good carpet cleaner for cat urine?? she is constantly on the go, she has the other kitten to play with and they are none stop.

I am sure that Vax do one called AAA - for their carpet cleaning machine. Do you use a machine? If not something like Simple Solutions stain and odour remover - make sure to choose the cat one, available from Pets at Home or Jollyes Pet Store. I would still play with the kitten - one - to give the other kitty a break, and two - to form a good bond with her, and three - her antics will make you laugh and blow away any troubles from your day, and four - you will probably tire her out more than the other kitty - he might get fed up with her more quickly. If you have Sky - there is a wonderful program called My Cat from Hell on Animal Planet - worth watching.

Ooooh you don't have enough litter trays pet! That's the first problem - they usually say one per cat and a spare so that would be three in your case. Have them in various rooms and placed in a quiet spot where a cat can feel safe whilst doing their toilet. Do you have open trays or hooded (covered) ones? I use World's Best cat litter which might seem pricey but lasts a lot longer than supermarket litter. I started using it three years ago when we had a very frail old cat and the fine grains suited her perfectly. Perhaps your kitten would prefer a different type of litter? What type was the breeder using? As has already been said you need to clean the carpet etc with something which will remove the smell of cat pee (even if you cannot smell it, your cat will). I've always used a product called Simple Solution which is amazing at removing stains like blood, vomit, poo, spilt wine etc....you get all manner of accidents when fostering oldies The spilt wine though? Not the cats.....clumsy husband! Add a couple more litter trays, scoop out any business done as soon as you can and have a good wash & clean of soiled areas and I'm sure things will sort themselves out

Hiya. Someone tagged me scallywag?? Sorry I was eating pizza!! Pets@Home do a good carpet cleaner and spray that is meant to get rid of all smells related to all pet urine? And as @gillykat says you probably need more litter trays, although I have two cats and only two litter trays and have never had problems, they do say one for each cat and a spare. I would really limit the rooms that she can go in to and remove anything that she may pee on, so pet beds etc. I would also show her the trays and even put some of her pee or poo in it so her smell is in there. Not sure what else to suggest apart from make sure she has lots of toys and is played with in the rooms with the trays. Hope that helps a little.

Not a cat expert as such but have heard sometimes putting a water bowl near where they are weeing can help also.

cathlee,I can only echo what the others have said. - Cleaning with carpet cleaner will not get the smell (to a cat) of urine & therefore indicates to Freya that this is a place to use as a litter tray. I use Simple Solutions
www.petsathome.com/shop/simple-solution-stain-and-odour-remover-by-pets-at-home-58674 (there may well be other places to get this from & there is a larger version which I get to top up the spray) for bedding & some carpets. On other carpets I use diluted distilled vinegar (the clear not the brown malt vinegar) - I would recommend at least 3 litter trays & preferably in different locations - cats often don't like to poo & wee in the same place or in something that another cat has used
- As she uses the litter tray for pooing then the litter itself is Ok but trying a different one in another litter tray might prove whether that is an issue.
- As to washing pet bedding etc. I again spray with Simple Solutions & use biological detergent. (A friend has also said the Oxi-Action stain remover sprays work as well as Simple Solutions)
- Again from a friend - the bean bag can feel/sound like litter to a cat so that might be an reason.
- Stress could be another reason - are any of the other cats guarding the litter trays? Are the trays private? General stress could also be a problem - Feliway diffusers of Pet Remedy ones may be off help there
- Territory marking could also be a reason - we have a cat (who does go out) that has wee'd over some of the other cats' toys on beds/carpets. We have now put a layer of PVC material under bedspreads on all the spare beds to that we don't have to keep taking duvets to the launderette & oddly this has seemed to stop her - we also have waterproof mattress protectors on all the beds just in case. We seem to have stopped her behaviour - just the odd accident. Partly stress, partly temper tantrum/boredom. Long story on her. Also she has wee'd in her bed when at the cattery (but not always)
- Despite having the other kitten to play with, playing with her may help. Also as they are stuck indoors do they have plenty of cat climbers/scratch posts/hidey holes/high places to keep them amused & also a chance for their own time/space?
I wish you luck in finding the right solution for Freya & you - I can really appreciate the problem from personal experience - ours was/is a behavioural issue due to the cat concerned having difficulty integrating with our existing 3. Nearly 2 years later we feel we are getting somewhere but its not perfect yet.

Thank you everyone for your advice it is much appreciated. Im going to give the Simple Solutions a go. Believe it or not Freya has been in her tray this morning and had a wee, she knows what they are for and where they are, just hope she keeps it up. (she got lots of praise) Cat bed has now gone and so has the bean bag, lets hope it onwards and upwards.

Hope that does the trick.
Was it just one cat bed she used in this way? What are you now using for sleeping facilities?
Lets us know how it goes.
