Hi, we've got a one year old cavapoo that has his bed in our room which he starts off in but sooner or later he ends up in our bed causing us to have a disrupted night. What can we do to make sure that he stays in his bed?
Thanks
Jim

Welcome to the forum jimmax. I'm Toni with 4 rescue cats but was brought up with dogs who were not allowed on beds. Their beds were in downstairs rooms. That was a long time ago & I know that times have changed so can't really give any advice. Luckily we only ever have 1 of our cats on the bed at night & he doesn't disturb us but that doesn't help you. Hope someone else here can help you.

My dog Bailey is allowed to sleep in my bed so wouldnt be much. Can he not sleep on the landing with a baby gate at your door. Then he can still see and hear you. Sure he would settle quickly.

You could try getting a crate and putting his bed in there.

I sympathise with you, our Jasper is just the same. It wasn't my idea to have him on the bed with us but my other half was too soft with him and now he's living to regret it, When you feel him get on you could tell in to get down and go in his own bed and reward him when he does this. Hopefully in time he'll know to stay in his own bed. Hope this helps.

All I'd suggest is positive reinforcement, when dog jumps on bed remove the dog and praise it for lying on own bed, repeat this and dog will soon understand but weather u can be bothered to be consistent with this at all hours of the night is up to u.
My labs sleep in my room, generally one at the bottom of the bed all thou the night, the other comes for a cuddle and shares my pillow for a hour or so then he jumps down and goes to lie in his bed for most of the night (he only started doing this when we bought him a different bed he loves) he does appear back in bed between 4/6 am but it doesn't bother me as I love them for the heat

Thanks for the advice, think I might try giving him a treat when he gets off the bed ( but might do it at the weekend);-)

Earl is allowed on my bed, but not my parents. Choose one of the methods already suggested if you think it will work, and then keep the door firmly shut until your dog is trainer to keep off the bed.

well i think it is something u have to start as you mean to go on really, my late dogs were both allowed on my bed a mistake i made from day one really but at the time i was living on my own so it was a little different, Riley does sleep in our bedroom down the side of me but he has his own bed, he is quite happy in his own bed he knows that we are close by.When he wakes in a morning he stands and puts his paws on the bed and normaly gives you a sloppy kiss but he has never tried to get on our bed and we have never encouraged him to do so. i have learnt by my past mistakes..

You need to lock up your room at night or put sour apple on it that is what we are doing to make sure are dogs dont get on the couch only dogs can smell the sent and also there is one thing that you may not want to do but it is safe go to your nearest petsco or petsmart or even there website and ask where you can bye something that you insert into your bed were if he gets to close he get shocked like a bark collar

They are inhumane and cruel. Plus it instils a fear in your dog which is completely unnecessary. There are much kinder, less psychologically - damaging ways which are more effective.

Also worth mentioning that you will have to tell him to get down every time and never let him on the bed. Consistency is key in training and if you let a dog up some times but not others then it will send mixed signals and become confusing. So no sneaky morning cuddles on your bed

It was pretty easy to train Alfie to not be on the bed whilst I'm in it. He used to sleep on there as a puppy but then he got bigger and bigger and he took up too much room. I found the best way to stop him was to be more annoying to him than he was to me If he jumped up I would wiggle and kick my feet and just generally fidget about and not let him get comfortable - he soon got fed up and jumped off and into his own bed just next to mine. It only took a few nights of this before he decided it wasn't much fun sleeping with me He is allowed on the bed when I am not in it, he doesn't attempt to get up at night anymore. An 'off' command works well too!
