Almost four years ago I rescued six hens to add to my flock. That was when Homes4hens began! I was mortified by the conditions the hens were kept in and even more so, the state of the hens This is when I decided I wanted to do more for these poor girls. Every time I would go to a farm I wanted to take more and each year I would make the hen plot bigger so I could. This is why I set up collection points all over Scotland, so I could get more hens in homes so they didn't have to facing slaughter after a year of hell. I cannot thank my dedicated volunteers enough for making this all possible
The reason I am writing this is because on that very first rescue there was a hen from the six that touched my heart and she stood out from the rest because her comb was so large it covered one side of her face, hence the name Floppy
She was big and brave and feared nothing! Over the years she had seen many hens come and go and every time she had to show them she was... THE BOSS! For the past year Floppy has retired and taken a back seat, she sits back while the younger hens fight for top ranking but she just enjoys sunbathing and relaxing. This week Floppy had really slowed down, she was still the big plump healthy girls with the red comb but she would eat, drink and then just sleep. I started to think that she probably wouldn't last the week. This morning while letting the girls out for their breakfast I noticed Floppy wasn't there, so I checked the coop and found her in a sleeping position and she had passed away in her sleep. I am of course devastated :'-( I am going to miss her so much and it will be so strange not having her around after all these years. Floppy was six years old, she was one of the lucky ones and she is also the reason over 6,000 hens have been rescued! She was an amazing hen with so much character
This is her in all her glory, enjoying what all hens should be...FREE! R.I.P my baby girl x
