We picked up our cats from the cattery last Sunday after their week's holiday there. Later in the day I found a lump on Lexie's tail. Thought I'd keep an eye on it for a few days as she wasn't in any pain from it. Couldn't tell quite where it was as it seemed to move a bit in position. Well the lump did seem to go down by Wednesday but Lexie had started being sneezy & snuffly.
On Thursday morning I noticed her washing the underside of the base of her tail quite a bit so checked it out & she yelped & when I touched it again she yelped again & pushed me away. So a vet visit was booked for the afternoon.
The vet didn't know where to start so decided to listen to her chest which seemed clear but was a bit difficult to tell as Lexie didn't stop purring like a train!! Then it was temperature check or tail exam? Went for temp. first, which Lexie didn't like much (the vet agreed she wouldn't like it either!) At last this meant that the vet was able to say that whatever the problem with Lexie's tail was there was no nerve damage as she was able to swish it well! Temperature was OK.
Next the tail exam after feeling around which was obviously painful for Lexie, the vet found the cause - an abscess an inch or so from the base of her tail on the underside. It had already burst but the vet managed to express it further which was definitely not a pleasant experience for Lexie (or the vet!) So 2 injections later (antibiotic & anti-inflammatory) Lexie was sent home with antibiotics, twice a day, for 6 more days & she's to share Penny's Loxicom for 4 days.
Poor Lexie, its still uncomfortable but looking much better. She's not good at taking the Anirobe capsule so have put it in her wet food which wasn't popular either so she's on a treat food (Applaws/Encore) which is vanishing - powders? what powders? Suspect I might have trouble with normal wet food when she finishes the course She's still having her kibble as well.
She doesn't need to go back unless she doesn't improve. Sniffles etc. seem to have stopped today so just the tail to heal. Goodness knows how she did it!! She had a pen to herself at the cattery (all our cats do) so shouldn't have been a fight.
