Oh dear Jasper cocking your leg, not good, trouble is they can save a bit and squeeze out a dribble at every lamp post, Beau is the worst for saving some LOL But your probably right Caz he maybe felt threatened suddenly eh ? Glad the treatment is working thou, thats good news all round Twelve months on from this post, Jasper has not forgotten the Staffie hurting him in the vets, and now when he meets a male one he will go for it. I think its a fear thing so attack first.

A dog's memory is a very odd thing (to me) as once when I was out with Pepper & Ellie, a little Schnauzer went for them - only barking and lunging - and Pepper has never forgotten this. Every single time we meet this particular Schnauzer, she will go for it. I left her off the lead once as she looked like she was just going to have a sniff at him, but then she went for him! So now, if I spot him coming, I put her on the lead. She still goes mad, but doesn't get to him (he also goes mad at her). But she doesn't bother with any other Schnauzers we meet! Poor Jasper must have generalised his fear to all male Staffies

I think you're right orpheous87 and it's a shame as one of the OH's mates has a gorgeous little staffie and Jasp just won't tolerate him. the poor thing is terrified of Jasper, and if it wanted to it could eat Jasper for tea.

Aw, that's a shame I think you often find that too. My old neighbours used to have a huge Mastiff who used to cry when our little Collie cross would bark at him!

Had Jasper at the vets for his 6 months Carprofen injection, and while I was there I asked him what hi thought about getting Jasper neutered. Haver discussing it we decided not to have it done right now, The reasons being....We don't want to risk him putting weight on, and there's no reason to on a temperament issue as like Chris the vet said, he has a fantastic temperament which is unusual for his bread. As for the health reasons the he's not too worried about testicular cancer as normally if it does develop it's benign, but he's more bothered about prostrate cancer, so we are going to wait until Jasp is about 7/8 years old a revenue it then. So all in all Jasper get to keep his family jewels for a few more years yet.

He's 11 now and I've never had it done because there has never been the need! I do worry about cancer now he is older but it's so hard to know what to do for the best

Yeah, I will do next time he is in for something. I know they're in favour of neutering all dogs though so not sure how balanced the response will be!

No explaining of the pro and cons. And the nurses - in my experience are even worse.

I'm lucky that way. He won't do a procedure just for the sake of it.
Jasper has a bad hip so he doesn't want him to put any weight on if we can help it, and putting any undue stress on it, and having him done now could result in this.
I alfie has any joint issues then you need to take this into account, but as our vet says, if we have him done when he about 7/8 years old when he's slowed down a bit and he puts some weight on then we can manage it, but right now the risk outweighs the gains.

My vets won't do procedures just for the sake of it ......except castration of dogs. They used to ask me every time I took my male dogs there - until I got fed up with it and asked them not to mention castrating my dogs unless the dogs' health necessitated it, or I would take my custom elsewhere. From talking to other dog owners, I know my experience is not exceptional.

I don't think neutering equals instant weight gain with the correct exercise and diet. With neutered animals I think they tend to advise that they have a lower-calorie diet so that they can lead their lives how they did pre-neuter with no additional exercise

There's no reason why Jasper should put any extra weight on just because he's neutered as long as he is still getting enough exercise I've never had a fat dog and my lot are always neutered.

I actually have one dog thats weight crashed after being spayed!! She always has liked to be different!!
My vets advice (though I have not needed to heed it yet) is that you should reassess diet after neutering and reduction in food can be as great as 25%!
As others have put as long as dog is active the weight should stay the same.
With Alfie, at 11 yrs old I guess you have to weigh up the potential benefits of reducing cancer risk vs dog having to have anesthetic in latter years and if by neutering it might not help health issues he already has.
