barley is having a slight problem with his backside at the moment, he is going to the toilet fine, but he keeps licking and chewing his bottom, which is causing scabs to form which makes him itch it more. We don't know what the cause of this is, it is nothing like worms as he is up to date with all that, it could be something to do with his anal glands.
we will probably end up taking him to the vet cause it is very uncomfortable for him, but just wanted to see if anyone else had any suggestions, i don't really want to put any cream on it cause it is a very sensitive area, this has been going on for a while but the last couple of days he has got worse in his biting and chewing.

Very sensitive question ( don't take it wrong ) apart from the anal glands, have you checked for fleas ? Beau was doing this a couple of months back, he got fleas being in the Kennels, he was also mithering the rear end. And yes he is treated every 2 months for flea

i have checked for that, and no he has not got any, and since i have literally just given him a hose down and bath, i don't expect there to be any on him, he gets treated every month for fleas.

Sounds DEFINITELY like the anal glands are full. This causes horrible discomfort to the dog - Earl has had it loads before and he's been very grouchy and uncomfortable looking because of it. When was the last time you had Barley's anal glands released? At worst cases the anal glands get infected and at worst WORST WORST cases the glands have to be removed.
I am jumping the gun maybe, but just warnings of what happens in worst cases. I am sure Barley's anal glands are simply full and need releasing - then they will hopefully be back to normal.
Has he been going to the toilet as normal previously, not just a few days back? Try keeping a toilet diary for the next few weeks and see if he is going normally. Just to make sure the problem is not linked to that.

I would try and get them looked at to see if they are full.

Can you most definitely confirm that Barley has NO anal gland problems?

Sounds like anal glands to me. Jasper's were impacted and he was going to the toilet fine. No carpet surfing but foot chewing and back end chewing.
They usually empty themselves but there sometimes can be issues. We get a couple of dogs into work who have chewed all the hair off their back ends and tails trying to stop the discomfort. One had glands that were visible and the size of marbles. Very uncomfortable.
If you take him to the vet ASK for his glands to be expressed. Very few vets do it otherwise. One dog we get in was given three lots of antibiotics for allergies, came to us, got the glands expressed and was fine. I also had to press to get jasper's emptied.

Yeah the anal gland thing is common in dogs. Both ruby and otto have had theirs done, it doesn't hurt them and only takes a few seconds!

I would take Barley to vet a.s.a.p, as if anal glands are the problem, you don't want to risk them becoming infected. It happened to Skip a couple of times,it isn't comfortable for the dog having them done, but most tolerate it well.Poor Skip screamed,so not wanting another occurrence, and knowing it can be diet related,I changed from J.W.B.ordinary kibble to the vegetable kibble (in the green foil bag).Touch wood,he has been fine since then.

Poor jasper hope he is better soon
i think what really made dad book him in for the vets was he started to chew his paws again, but in a more sort of frustration way as he would try to lick his back side then lay down and lick his paws. and he had started to pull clumps of hair out from his backside

Oh he's ok in himself, just I noticed a small bit of blood in one of his chews, I think he has a slight ear infection and he sometimes looks like he has an abnormal gait when we're out walking. Plus he's getting his boosters. And this is the first one we'll have gone to our new vet. He's gonna love them And poor Barley definitely sounds like glands, jasper chewed and licked his feet terribly when his were impacted. Didn't chew his hair out though.
