Well it turned out not to be the boiler but the pump - my first diagnosis. Oddly that had been replaced in the service last November but apparently, according to this engineer, it was the wrong one. The pump is in the airing cupboard upstairs. He replaced it with great difficulty involving grabbing towels from the airing cupboard shelf when he got some water leakage (I think more than he was expecting) he also had to replace or readjust in some way the piping in the airing cupboard to fit his new one. Also needed to go up into the loft space involving having to get my large step ladder out & using the loft hatch which is over the gallery landing between my bedroom & the one the boys are in. The airing cupboard is on the other side of the gallery. Through of this I could hear some combination of banging, clanging, muttering & sighing although predominately the banging & clanging & going up & downstairs to get things out of his van. Not the best to happen for the boys - one of the question the rescue ask is are you having any works done at home to which I had answered no!!. Stevie has been hiding most of Saturday & Sunday but had started staying out yesterday afternoon & this morning so I expected him to be in hiding when I finally got to check on the pair after he'd gone & I could guarantee that they'd not get outside (he was continually having to open & close the front door which is straight of the hall so no way to stop them if they got out of their room). Well surprise surprise they were both out in the open. Not looking at all worried - so good news. Osiris had vacated the house the minute the engineer came & Lexie was following me around (as she was before the engineer came - she was missing her heat) or being Miss Supervisor checking on the engineer It took just 5 minutes to sort the gas fire out, a simple adjustment of a knob. He finished around 15:40 & the radiators are working again (although he has warned that some may stop for a day or so as air may be pumped round the system - he has bled all the radiators (missing 2 - the boys room & my junk room where you can't get to the radiator easily!) but there may still be air. I've just got to bleed radiators as necessary & not panic as they should clear. Osiris is now back & snoozing on my bed & Lexie is happily in a cat bed by the radiator also in my bedroom. The temperature is gradually rising but is still not reached its normal. I think it got quite chilly with no heating & the front door opening & closing. Fish & chips for me tonight with extra fish for the cats.

Spent a while this evening cleaning up after the engineer, he omitted to say he'd spilt his tea, at least I assume that was the brown on the rails of the landing's balustrade, & the carpet alongside, on the other side of the gallery from where he was working except when he went up the ladder to the loft. He worked hard to get the heating working but wasn't the best at tidying up after himself. Mind you there were quite a few water spillage patches (not large) which I had to wait until they were dry to ensure they were clean water so missed these small patches on the carpet as you turn round the newel post as I was mainly concentrating on heading to the boys room. Hopefully I've got the stains out but will have wait to see how they dry & vacuum up. All 4 cats enjoyed their fish

Heating seems OK although somehow the hot water temperature on the emersion got changed. This morning it was very, very hot which is a problem I've had in the past but this was even hotter so I checked the thermostat control which is not clear whether top or bottom is the marker point. When I got a torch out, its at the bottom of the emersion in the airing cupboard & as the door opens such that my body was blocking a lot of the light, I saw that the bottom was at 90C!!! I remember one time an engineer was here for a service & asked about the temperature control & after clarifying its got nothing to do with the boiler itself just the one on the emersion tank. He said that this setting often confuses people & its the bottom that is the setting. No wonder it was rather hot!! It's now at 60C so I'll see what happens.
The boys are doing quite well - will post (with pics/video) over the next few days.
