I've just noticed that Morandi's teeth are pretty bad.His breath isn't smelly but there is a good bit of build up on his teeth. Without changing his food, what could I do to make it somewhat better. Charlie's aren't as bad, and Mrs.Woman has no teeth anyway.

Do you think you would be able to clean his teeth? If so there are various toothpastes & cleaning tools (including your finger!) available. Also products such as plague off to add to food. If you can do the same for Charlie then that would help him as well. I've had a look a one or 2 of the websites I use for our cats & found this www.vetuk.co.uk/pet-dental-care-c-11 which has a wide variety of products. I'm not suggesting using this one for anything just thought it might give you an idea of what is available. I know you're in Ireland so there may well be different products & companies. I'll be honest we don't do anything with our cats teeth but January last year Osiris had to have his teeth cleaned under anaesthetic but he won 't let us touch his mouth so teeth cleaning is out.

He is usually not too fussy about his mouth. I heard that baking soda can be used on dogs (and humans) but I wonder could it be used on cats.

Hi, We have a simular problem with our cat,she is 9 and her teeth arn't too bad other than her back teeth, its much more difficult with cats as they don't chew bones etc. my cat does tend to swallow most of her biscuits but she wouldn't tolerate her teeth brushing either.
In the past she has had her teeth cleaned under a general, it is a common problem with cats and i don't know about your cat but mine is getting quite fussy what she eats and she will onle eat Gocat biscuits,it must be an age thing.

I clean my 3 cats teeth twice a day with Logic from the vets. I just put a small amount on my finger and rub it on. A finger brush did come with it but they will not tolerate that any where near their mouths. Hope that helps

Can you get some Plaque Off? Meant to work for cats too. Rigsy has bad teeth, but she's so wild we can't really do much about them. Lucky hasn't got any teeth (they were rotten when we adopted him so they were removed) and Skye's teeth are actually quite good at the moment. I'm thinking I'll put some PO on her dinner though.

LOGIC! Can't praise it enough (although I have in other posts lol) Brilliant stuff. Like catz I put a small amount on Molly's paw for her to wash off. She is 18 and only had one tooth removed and that was bad when it came through. Touch wood I have to say as with her HCM having an anaesthetic is not an option at this stage in Molly's life.

I am sure that Logic breaks down the plaque. I don't really rub their teeth just quickly wipe it on as that is all they will allow me to do.

Originally, when it was first suggested by the vet I thought it had to be placed/brushed on their teeth/gums, which was definitely going to be a problem for the one who needs it most (Osiris). However when I got the sample it said it could be placed on a paw, wasn't sure how well that worked on the teeth. Nice to hear that it does, glad you posted this puddycats. Think I'll have to try it with him. He's such a fussy eater that I suspect the strong smelling Plaque Off wouldn't get eaten or the food it was in.

Toni there is something in Logic that makes the substance stick to their teeth (even when placed on their paws to wash off). It does tell you this in the instructions too :-).

Thanks puddycats, I've only got a sample so it didn't go into detail about that. That explains why it works though.

My friends who do rescue work for the local animal shelter had never heard of brushing cat's teeth.
A cursory google turned up a bunch of instructional videos, but I have to admit, is this just one of those things that overzealous pet owners do?

Would you say you're overzealous?

However some cats tend to bad gums & teeth & if that's the case then it makes sense to try & prevent it as much as possible. 3 of our 4 cats (including Penny, the eldest (14)) have good teeth (well she has a few missing but that was before we got her aged 8) Osiris had bad gums when we got him at nearly 2 nearly 6 years ago. He's already had one dental cleaning under anaesthetic & will probably have another in the next year but is also the worst when it comes to dealing with his mouth - I wonder if that is because it has been sore at times. He won't touch dried anything (including treats) - completely shies away from the smell.
