Hi everyone I'm not sure what to do?! Sometimes Archie will growl at the other the dogs, he's hasn't never snapped at them, but when he does they back off . It's usually when food is around, but today I let him in the garden through the door and played with him for a while and then let otto in too. I was just sat on the steps stroking them both when Archie started growling. Otto didn't do anything, and I tried to give them equal attention just to makes sure it wasn't jealousy. I was just stroking otto for a minute and Archie climbed on my knee as if to say pet me! Ruby then came in and otto ran at her to play fight, and Archie was fine for a w minutes chasing the others round the garden but then when they had all calmed down he was back to how he was before, he was very quiet and slow and was hiding behind me. Hes never usually like this, all the dogs are normally the best of friends but its just once In a while it happens. Sorry if this made no sense!

If this isn't normal behavior, it may pay to talk to your vet about it as he may have an underlying problem, and he's feeling a bit off colour. Is he eating and drinking ok?

It sounds as if Archie is feeling either slightly jealous/envious of the others or feeling a little left out in the games. If Archie is the eldest dog in the 'pack' he may be feeling a little sick of all the play fighting games. Maybe he is feeling a bit ill? Dogs have off days too like us, and things might get back to usual tomorrow. Good luck, hope they all get along again soon

Sorry meant to post this in dog problems! And when I say not normal behaviour, it happens whenever one of the dogs goes near him when he's eating, so it can be once a day but when food isn't concerned it couple happen whenever just out of the blue. He is eating and drinking fine

He's the youngest in the bunch, but then again the smallest too. A lot of times ruby and otto can get really lively and he goes all quiet and goes inside because he doesn't really enjoy the rough games! I don't think he's Ill because it's been happening for a while now. And thanks, hopefully things should be back to normal soon!

He might be feeling left out because he is small and young. Maybe he dislikes all the rough play?

He isn't really a fan of it but when They are all calm and quiet he can just growl for no reason? It's confusing haha! I hope he isnt developing little dog syndrome, although I don't see why he would because we have treated him like a normal dog, and haven't pampered him anymore than the others!

Archie just come in now, the others are playing rough outside, and now he's hiding under the bed, does anyone know why?

After reading your later posts, I think it sounds like he's lacking in confidence and when he's growling its a bit like bravado. If it's happening more a feeding time try putting Archies food down first and a little distance away from your other two dogs so he does feel intimidated by them while eating. But it may be a case of little dog BIG attitude.

How old is Archie now doggiesrule28280? Maybe he's going through his teenage phase and feeling a little bit out of sorts? Like cazypops said, maybe try feeding them separately or at a bigger distance than normal if it's happening particularly at mealtimes. Pepper barks at Ellie if she jumps off the settee or runs out into the garden first. I think it's her way of telling Ellie that she (Pepper) is boss. Has Archie been neutered?

I third the separate feeding thing. It can be quite intimidating for dogs to have another dog in its face while eating. A lot of dogs are slightly food aggressive and separating is the easiest way to go as rectifying food aggression towards dogs is difficult and a long process.
If he growls when food isn't involved, is there something else involved (you, toy, specific sleeping space?) If so then that also could be guarding. If other dogs are trying to get him to play he might just not want to play.
Orpheus makes a good point? Is he in the adolescent phase? Dogs go through a second fear period at adolescence where they feel less confident and may become anxious/fearful of things that hasn't bothered them before.

Archie just come in now, the others are playing rough outside, and now he's hiding under the bed, does anyone know why? The reason that would come to mind straight away would be that he is getting annoying/getting to dislike rough play. Not all dogs are a fan of rough play at all.

Thanks everyone! Archie probably is going through adolesnce. I will try the separate feeding thing and let you know how it goes! I think it could've guarding because when I have been training him in the garden and I let otto in, he will sit on my knee and growl Also when otto will do his business Archie just has to go and wee on top of it! Does this have anything to do with it?

Hi doggiesrule28280, what are the breeds of your dogs? It could be as mentioned a bit of adolescence and wanting to be the alpha dog of the pack (weeing on top of another dogs business). Have a chat with your dog trainer, or a local one if your not going to training.
Good luck and hopefully you'll find a solution.

Good luck in sorting it, do you tell him off when he growls when the others come near you?
