Both Stevie & Shady have been scratching well these last few months. I'd changed Stevie to Advocate last month as he'd been getting a small bald patch from the Frontline & that seemed to cure his scratching & bald spot as well until this last week or so. Last month Shady had the last Frontline & also started scratching quicker that I anticipated, so booked him into the vets to
a) being assessed for new prescription meds - Advocate is not an over the counter flea & tick treatment
b) to get his claws clipped as he was tugging a fair amount of hair out.
My vets, as a result of the Owner/Senior vet dying last year & his son taking over, they have done quite a big rationalisation from a hospital & 2 other surgery along with a franchise, to 1 surgery & the franchise is now completely independent. The main hospital is now closed as is the smaller of the 2 surgeries but the newest surgery has been kept, luckily that's in my village However it does mean that everyone who has decided to continue under new brand (still an independent vet) has only 1 place to go! All the staff are based there whereas the admin/management was previously done at the hospital.
I rang the vets Saturday morning to book Shady's vet consult & 10:15 today (Friday) was the earliest I could get, not sure if that was because I asked for a morning appointment as he goes out or just the first one available.
Their car park was full, although not sure if that was all vet staff/patients or anyone else using it so checked & the reception had a few waiting, they were running late. so went to pick up my meds from the chemist & came back, still full but 1 person was just leaving but the space wasn't quite big enough for me to get out & get Shady's big carrier out the passenger seat! Just then someone else left so got a space. There was only one other patient waiting & I had already booked in. I was called into the consulting room by a tall, young female vet I'd not seen before, she apparently had only been there 6 weeks. She was really nice.
She looked in the top of Shady's carrier & once I had removed the cushion & blanket from on top of him, commented on his unusual colour, its much lighter than Roman's was, much more of a fudge than an orange ginger. Took him out & said he was lovely. Not so lovely was the flea dirt & the odd live one found, one escaped on to the consulting table & I squashed it!!!. He definitely had fleas so he's got his Advocate, he was weighed in at 4.43kg, heart etc fine, no issues with coat, baldness, lumps. when I told her about the pigeon she said he wouldn't have wanted his tea then, I said "don't you believe it" I mentioned the slight diarrhoea which I attributed to the pigeon she took his temperature which was normal and agreed with my suggestion of the Nutrabio that Stevie has had in the past. It turns out they don't use that now but do an equivalent.
So came away with 6 months of Advocate, this new probiotic digestive paste Select Healthcare from NVS www.nvsweb.co.uk/product/probiotic-digestive-paste/ and a consultation fee (which was the cheapest of the 3!!!) not forgetting the total will be making a mark on my credit card bill later this month!!!!!
Got Shady home, promptly gave him the Advocate Spot-on & then both he & Stevie got their breakfasts. After breakfast Stevie was also treated with Advocate, not impressed!!! Carrier bedding is now washed & carrier cleaned. Think I might have a few other coverings/beds to wash to make sure no fleas about. Ironically the whole house had its weekly clean yesterday, which includes vacuuming all the cats beds/ cushions/blankets as well as the carpets, pity they hadn't been treated beforehand!!! Will have to keep an eye on them, Shady likes a brush but Stevie doesn't & it will be difficult to see anything in his black fur as opposed to combing anything out.
