Thank you all for your birthday wishes I had a lovely day with a nice meal at home (courtesy of M&S! ) and some nice presents from friends including some lovely flowers, a book on cats "What Your Cat is Thinking ", a wine & nibbles hamper and one that took me back to my childhood in the Lake District. It is You Got This inspirational quotes pack of cards. The first one I saw said "Difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations" & I immediately thought of my dad driving over the Hardknott Pass , which is a steep single track winding road which had passing places warning signs of 1:3 inclines & severe bends!!!. As this was in the late 50's a number of cars in those days weren't that powerful & needed to get a run up to the incline so we always hoped we didn't meet one that had to stop/give way & couldn't get going again. Our car had enough power but we could have been stuck behind one which wasn't! However it was always worth it for the views. We combined the Wrynose Pass from the Landale Valley & then Hardknott to get to Eskdale. Great views & a thrilling journey well at least for the passengers in the car not sure about the driver!!! It was this, that even before I was old enough to drive, taught me the Highway Code rule that a driver should give way to vehicles going up an incline & also to check for passing places on narrow roads even before you needed them!

Glad that you had a good birthday tonib. You had lovely presents. That was interesting regarding the driving through the Lake District. It explains the bit I saw in the first episode of All Creatures Great and Small and that's what happened with the vet's car in it.

That episode took me back as well lotsofcats albeit it was in the Yorkshire Dales but we did travel from the north west (Kendal & Bolton) to Hull & Beverley in the East Riding of Yorkshire in those days as well. Definitely interesting driving on some of the winding roads with drops on one side when crossing the Pennines! Still have fun driving over some of the passes, Snake pass for one!

Thank you mistyanna & spider . I loved living on the edge of the Lake District (Kendal), for the 3 years I was there (aged 8 to nearly 11), and actually going to school in it for the last 2 years. Just to clarify the school wasn't in a lake just in the area (Windermere)!! although one lesson (outing?) a week in summer was as they had swimming sessions in Lake Windermere. The water could be rather chilly but fun, I remember jumping in from the jetty (not sure if we bombed as well from it, that might have been frowned on! ), and after we got changed back out of wet swimsuits we were provided with hot cocoa & ginger nut biscuits, warming & yummy! A winning combination that has stayed a real favourite with me even now, although then there was the extra bonus of having someone else make the cocoa!!!! It was certainly a time for exercise as we had to walk (in a crocodile) from the school to their large summerhouse (the best description I can come up with) by the lake where we changed into & out of our swimsuits before walking back!
