OMG, I nearly lost Kiba-Khan. I came out from the vets and was walking along with him when suddenly the carrier tipped forward and out he fell!!, thankfully he was a bit dopey from the anaesthetic and I managed to pick him up quickly but I couldn't get him back in the carrier because the door kept shutting and I needed 2 hands to hold Kiba-Khan. I had to call for somebody to help me and a woman with her dog came. I can't believe that the nurse in the vets didn't do the carrier up properly. I hadn't checked either....but, when I got home and let Kiba-Khan out there was one of the carrier's clips inside with him (one from by the door)! Cat carriers have clips all around the middle and they can be unclipped to lift off the top part. I only ever use the door in the front to put my cat in. Because they hadn't put the last clip in (which I couldn't get back in either) due to the fact that they hadn't aligned all the clips up exactly, when Kiba-Khan was being carried his weight caused the carrier to open a bit and this caused the door to fall open. My poor heart! The price was bad enough for my heart before that.
Anyhow, Kiba-Khan purred all evening but he won't eat or drink anything. He was the same this morning so couldn't have his heart tablet or an antibiotic tablet. The nurse said he'd had Metacam and I know when I tried him with that before, he was sick. I'm hoping he starts to feel better today. He was happy to go out in the pen. I have to take him back tomorrow morning for a check up and to discuss with the vet about his constipation. The nurse said his heart tablets may have contributed to the constipation.

Oh no, thank goodness there was someone there to come to your aid. How is Kiba-khan this evening, has he started to eat anything yet? Hope all goes well at the vets tomorrow, and tell them to make sure the carrier is properly fastened.

Oh blimey , no wonder you nearly had a heart attack. ( Twice) These vets certainly know how to charge , How is Kiba Khan This morning?
Hope all goes well today , will you mention what happened ? I would , if only to make them more aware for the next poor customer. It would have Been a shock for poor KK too if he had not been doped up still.

Took him for his check-up but not good news. The vet said he is full of poo again and when I said he hadn't eaten she said the body produces waste matter all the time. She asked if I thought he'd given up and I said no. He was purring all the time yesterday evening. He even ate a little bit of food this morning and had his heart tablet. She gave him a squirt of something that should make him go. I have to watch him and phone and tell her if he uses the litter tray. As I had to go back to work I've put Kiba-Khan back in the pen and I've lined up the 3 litter trays so hubby can pop out into the garden to keep an eye out for any deposits. I have to phone the vet and tell her if he does any. If he still can't go she has suggested having him put to sleep as there is nothing else that can be done for him. Poor baby. when I put him back in the pen I offered him a dish of food and he was getting that down him when I come from there. I just pray that he will be okay.

oh Jenny so sorry to read the above. Fingers crossed hes just feeling under the weather and its nothing sinister. Did you say he had a scan of the bowel area ? Or was it just blood tests ? Could there be something more than a blockage there ?
What did they say about the incident yesterday in the carpark ?

If he can't use the litter tray, that's it, there's nothing that can be done for him apart from an enema and they can't keep doing that to him every day or so, that's no quality of life for him. He has what's called 'mega colon', where the colon has stretched over time due to his straining to have a poo. Once the elasticity is lost it becomes harder and harder to move the stools along. I give him lactulose to make sure he goes but it's the bulking up of the stools that's important. I used to give him Peridale and this more or less did the job. Then the manufacturers stopped making it - they said until October but they didn't resume. Other products have been okay but matters have got worse since he started on his tablets and then since Friday when he went off his food. Also, Kiba-Khan's heart tablets have made matters worse as they encourage the body to send all liquid out as wee and this is making the stools harder. It's not a good situation at all. I didn't mention the incident in the car park today but will send an email to the other vet who's the owner of the business.

lotsofcats, sorry to hear about Kiba-Khan, both the shock of a close escape & of his constipation & what the vet has said. Doing a bit of googling I came across these 2 threads on replacements for Peridale. I wonder if its worth giving Kiba-Khan another enema & giving these option(s) a try. www.petforums.co.uk/threads/need-alternative-to-peridale-granules.521862/www.petforums.co.uk/threads/is-there-an-alternative-to-peridale.521903/What also interested me was that one thread referred to having had similar issues & the vet eventually removed the colon Fingers crossed that Kiba-Khan has used the litter tray today. I suspect you may already have considered this but is it worth discussing with the vets about reviewing all his meds to see what can be done by changing any so that he might get a reasonable quality of life albeit possibly risking a shorter one.

He's been! I never thought I would be so delighted for a cat to have a poo!! He's eating well. Thanks for the link tonib, reading the posts has certainly helped. I'm considering Normacol Granules and/or Psyllium fibre as a replacement for Peridale. I'm going to phone the vet for his/her opinion before I choose and also I need to know the amount to put on Kiba-Khan's food. I think I need to stop him having kibble, although I have Royal Canin Fibre Response, which should help him. Again, I'll have to ask the vet. I don't know whether I would consider the removal of the colon as Kiba-Khan is considered elderly by the vet and I suspect his heart might not cope with a long operation.

I know just what you mean about being glad to see a poo lotsofcats (another story from the lockdown period I must type up!). Brilliant he is eating well also. I think I agree with you about the op but thought it was worth a mention especially if they can get his heart issues under control. Hope you have some success with the alternatives to Peridale, glad to have helped.

Hope you have some success with the alternatives to Peridale, glad to have helped. I've phoned my vets but the receptionist said no one was there (lunch time?). I've asked for their opinion of giving Normacol Granules or Psyllium fibre as an alternative to Peridale (which is no longer manufactured). Also asked for recommended amounts to give. I wondered if I should stop feeding kibble to Kiba-Khan, but I have Royal Canin Fibre Respose, which states it's for cats with constipation. Again, I've asked for the vet's opinion on this. I wonder if they will get back to me. I also sent an email telling them about Kiba-Khan falling out of his carrier. There was only a general email for Wellpets and this covers all vet surgeries under that name. I put the surgery name and the vet's name so hopefully someone will see it.

OMG lotsofcats Iโm sorry to read what you & Kiba-Khan have been going through I was so relieved that he finally managed a poo I too know how that feels from Molly it feels like youโve won a lottery when they finally manage it hope you find the alternative to help him and as for the carrier incident thatโs my biggest fear Iโm having to get Bella a new carrier as that chunky monkeys outgrown hers & Iโm fearful the bottom will fall out xx
