I dunno if anyone heard but there was a Cocker Spaniel stolen (another one) in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear. Gundogs have been going missing for months now (mainly Cockers and other spaniels, also Tollers I think). This worries me as I live in Washington, Tyne and Wear which next to Sunderland and Newcastle. I can't find the link now but the dog was a chocolate coloured Cocker so anyone in the Tyne and Wear area (I know Charlotte and Orpheous are kind of that area) so just keep a look out! What does everyone else think on this?!? This worries me as I own a Cocker Spaniel myself!!

When was this AL? I'm definitely more paranoid now with all the thefts of gundogs going on. I never let Pepper get too far away from me (on purpose anyway).

I am too Orpheous! It is worse for us knowing that we both have gundogs, well I have one anyway!! Yes be very careful, don't let their Spaniel noses take over them, I have to watch Roman too!! I am not certain on when it is but I saw the link this morning before school!

Pepper is a terrible dawdler. The only good thing is that she won't go up to people she doesn't know. Neither will Ellie. And I think that if anyone tried to suddenly grab them they'd run off. I hope anyway. I'm on a constant look out when I'm walking them now until we get to the enclosed field.

Oh you're joking when we hear of lost dogs we keep an eye out at the salon for new dogs coming in. unfortunately we don't have a microchip scanner which could be useful as there seem to be A LOT of dogs going missing/stolen. you two are both sensible though, you keep an eye on your guys (and girls!). i also think a majority of attacks seem to be on kennelled working dogs from what I've seen on the Internet. Jasper's not even a working dog and if someone a bit shifty asks me what he is I'll just say a rehomed Poodle cross. Can't even risk saying Cockerpoo anymore seeing as they're so popular! Chances are they wont be able to tell he's full poodle. Its awful that people have to shield their dogs while they're out with them now, I'm always a bit sketchy about walking on my own even though a majority of the people in my village are friendly and the only people that walk the same places as me are other dog owners. unfortunately people that steal dogs only think about what they can get out of it, not about the poor dog or owners...

Couldn't your bosses get a scanner? Although, I've said that, I have no idea how much they'd cost plus, how would you go about scanning the dogs? Walks take me so much longer since I have to wait for Pepper so often, but I can't risk letting her out of my sight. I think you're right, they do seem to be targeting the working dogs, but there's always the chance that someone who doesn't know what they're doing will just see a dog of that breed and take it. Pepper would be no use for anything considering she's chipped, neutered and isn't gundog trained, but an opportunistic person wouldn't know that. I feel the same as you, Charlotte. Where I walk, we usually meet the same people every week but occasionally there'll be someone new and I'm always a bit wary. Last week we saw two youngish lads walking a Saluki, which was having a great time running around. They were dressed like we were - wellies etc. so they looked the part, but we'd never seen them before so I was a little bit suspicious.

Thats the thing though, you can't really suspect anyone. Also, I personally think that if someone stole a dog, they wouldn't walk it out in public in case anyone noticed the dog and contacted the police, etc. Luckily, Roman is quite nervous with strangers (men in particular) and likes to bark at them as a warning (and this is to all new people) so if anyone tried to steal him, they would probably think twice! Hahha! Unfortunately, Charlie Boy doesn't mind new people and loves to be petted! - On the other hand, he is a Terrier , but he could be used for hunting rabbits, etc, if someone stole him! - They would have to train him though!

It is Chessy, welcome to the forum by the way. What type of dog(s) do you have? I have a Westie called Charlie Boy, he is 7 years old and a 7 year old Cocker Spaniel called Roman!

That's true, AL. No, they wouldn't. They would more than likely move it on quickly. Or dump it if it was made too hot to handle.
Both Pepper and Ellie are quite nervous around new people and won't always go to people who try and stroke them. I'm quite glad of this fact. I also think they'd dodge out of the way if anyone tried to grab them.

I'm not sure Orpheous(I will get round to replying to your b message too, I'm not being ignorant hah!). Both of them are trained to microchip, I'm not sure why we haven't got one... I'm the same, Jasper's usually beside me or just ahead but sometimes he just potters, so I wait to make sure he's still there... And yeah, I must say I feel a bit unsure when I see groups of young people out round the fields (lol I sound like a granny! I'm the same age as most the 'groups' I see haha) And yes, anyone would just see a breed and take it regardless of what it can or can't do. My brother and his girlfriend have been offered £300 for his Staffy pup by a group of young lads on numerous occasions. He told them not to come near him, his gf or Nala again. Hopefully they're not the type to take it further. Hopefully the trend of stealing dogs is nearly over

I am hoping it is nearly over Charlotte, but the thing is, the scary thing is that its started from right over the south end and ended up right up to the North East which is quite worrying for many dog owners!! Orpheous; You mentioned that Ellie would be no good because she is spayed, not trained for hunting and micro-chipped, but either way they could steal dogs just to sell!! We had a Miniature Jack Russell a few years back and he was stolen out of the back garden, someone sold him a few times, we got him back eventually though - unharmed luckily enough!

Oh No not another one??? If people ask me about Cooper I must look like a complete loon as I try to get in to conversation that his had the snip and he has allergies etc. I don't sound very positive about him to people I don't know?!?

Very wise Gladys, when people stop me to admire Skip,I tell them he is quite old being 10,and that he is a rescue dog and so is snipped and micro chipped.I wouldn't risk any chance of him being stolen.
