Isla, bless her, managed to run into a tree last week (before I got her) and has an open wound on her front shoulder. It's not weeping or anything, not smelly, dirty or getting scabby or crusty etc. To me it looks like a typical sighthound thin coat + thin skin tear and will heal on itself and not be able to be stitched because of the thin skin. It measures 1 inch circular. For now I'm keeping it clean, bathing twice daily with salty water and leaving it open so the fresh air can help it heal. Christy who had her had been bathing it daily in salty water too.
Any ideas how I should treat it?
I get paid on Friday 5th so may pop her along to our vets to let them have a look at it anyway.
Piccie - it looks worse than it actually is.

It looks nasty but clean. I would take her to the vet as it's quite big.

A good Honey like manuka EDIT .... I used it on Trinket under the vets recommendation and the hole closed up here is a snippet off the internet A recent study from researchers at the University of Glasgow demonstrated that various types of honey have antimicrobial action and were effective in inhibiting growth of bacteria commonly found in equine leg wounds. Honey as an antiseptic agent isnβt a new thing, but has long been thought to be limited to only a certain type of honey, specifically manuka honey. Manuka honey is made by honeybees pollinating the manuka tree, which grows in New Zealand and certain parts of Australia. Might be worth a phone call to your vet , but it has to be a certain type of honey not just a buck she cheap one off the shelf. Good luck www.thelabradorsite.com/manuka-honey-for-dogs/

Thanks for the advice - I think I'll get her booked into the vets anyway even if only to go on their books. She's 2yo, spayed, vaccinated and microchipped so hasn't cost me anything (free to good home too....that was more important than cash). I get paid on Friday so will pop in tomorrow and get her booked in for Friday. Like I say it's a clean wound, absolutely no sign of infection etc so I'm not worried about it but think I'll get some manuka honey anyway (I mentioned manuka to C. on Sunday when she was telling me about how Isla had done it and how she was treating it). I've sat Isla down though and had a chat about how trees don't move or give way, no matter how fast you may run at them I'll be getting her insured too.....quickest way to keep her fit and healthy

I second the honey - medical grade Manuka honey is amazing at treating wounds. Or, Leucillin antiseptic spray will help keep it clean too - you can get it in Pets At Home now.

Don't forget to get Isla's microchip details changed, I think they charge for it. Are the cats microchipped?

Just looked that up and reading the reviews it DOES look worth keeping some at home in the pet first aid box just in case Wound looks good today - pink skin around it, no weeping or smell....still nice and clean and I'm not worried about it. Any changes though and she'll be straight to the vet. One review seemed quite relevant and said... Day off tomorrow so any excuse to have a walk with Isla up to Pets @ Home and have a look at what we can spoil her with on Friday

I don't mind paying for her details to be changed into my name. I very much doubt the cats are microchipped or vaccinated TBH. I think Skank Sister may have had them vaccinated as kittens but not 100% sure so I'd planned to take them along to vets as soon as car is fixed and get them started on a complete kitten course anyway just to be on the safe side. I know she got them spayed for I think it was Β£5 each because she wasn't working.

I've used it on Pepper's hotspots and it clears them right up. It's just a matter of stopping Pepper from chewing at them!

orpheous87 I used it for a hole on Trinkett , vet told me to, it does work. I know it cost Β£10 - Β£20 a jar ( manuka ) but its still cheaper than a vet visit. I wouldn't get a large jar as over time it goes sugery @gillykat No one knew Trinkett shes the first dog that appears on this ....

Popped into our local WCF store and got Isla a proper greyhound collar, new lead, 25ft lunge line so she can have a gallop on open fields (get that tickle out of her feet!) and not be restricted to being stuck on the short lead until her recall is reliable. Got a few chews (she chose them ) and some of that leucillin spray and put some on once we got home and now, just 4hrs later it already looks a lot better
