So....I was at work yesterday afternoon, 31st March, and pottering about as you do. I was just putting some rubbish out when I saw a customer chatting away to someone she knew who had two gorgeous dogs with her - a Border Collie and a sandy-coloured whippet wearing THE most jazzy jumper ever Well, it would be RUDE to walk by and not say hello to the dogs, wouldn't it? It was a quiet afternoon (probably most folks out elsewhere with it being Mothers Day) so I took the opportunity to chat away to the dogs' 'owner'. Turns out she was just looking after them for her brother as his girlfriend wasn't keen on them being in the house. I was gobsmacked when she said she was looking for homes for them as she was moving house herself soon and could only take her cat. When I realised she wasn't just saying that I took a photo of the whippet & wrote ''This is Isla - she is coming home to us ASAP!'' and texted it to Neil I took the woman's phone number but told her I would DEFINITELY be taking Isla the whippet! I'm putting my foot down.....I'm 51 now, DESPERATE for a dog, my working hours are just Saturday & Sunday 5hrs each (Neil is off both days) and 5-9pm on Wednesday (Neil gets home at 5.20pm) so as far as I was concerned now was the perfect time and if Neil didn't like it then tough! I don't ask or much in life.....not bothered about fancy clothes or jewellery or holidays......IJUSTWANNADOG!!!!!!!!!! *stampsfoot*
He texted back an hour later (had been watching tv and didn't hear text ping) to say when was she coming home So I texted owner and told her hubby said yaay and said I'd call her when I finished my shift.
So, at 10am this morning there I was waiting at the entrance to our courtyard for C. to bring Isla round. We went for a wee walk with her whilst I was filled in on what she liked etc. She's around 2 years old, spayed, fully vaccinated etc. A terrible tealeaf if you leave food lying around (aren't they all!), has lived with cats & small children, not bothered by loud noises or bangs etc....good traveller in a car, loves the beach, good recall, loves cuddling up to you......she's just an all-round nice dog
The only thing I was 'worried' about was how she would be with 'our' two cats (Holly & Abby) who moved in four months ago . The skanky neighbour two doors away got them three years ago as kittens but soon grew bored of them so only let the live in her kitchen. Then a few months ago Neil overheard her telling her son to just get rid of them....dump them on the moor or summik! So Neil took them in! I told him I needed a break from cats as I was still upset about my boys having to go to his brother but he insisted and realistically there was no way I would let the disgusting chav do that to them So they kind of moved in with us! Neighbour has now got two designer puppies (lord knows how cos she's never worked!!!) which bark all day, she screams at when they bark and, until I yelled at her to take them for a proper walk, let them pee and poop in our communal courtyard. I think one of the other neighbours has put in a complaint though because she was accusing Neil and myself of reporting her and getting her evicted! It wasn't us.....tempting though it was last summer when the racket from her flat was beyond a joke!
I've had Isla out for a couple of walks today already so she's been in and out of the flat and already she seems to be learning the ropes about not charging up the stairs (I still have her lead on her in the house) and walking calmly past cats etc (back and forth, praise & treat ). At one point the dog as fast asleep and Abby, the shyer cat, walked up to her and sniffed her feet A good start *fingers crossed*
A couple of pics from my phone - stripy jumper was the pic I sent to Neil and today....on the Pastures in front of the castle & river.
We have her on trial but so far *touch wood* all looks good
