Why do dogs wee on three legs? Even some bitches cock their leg to go to the toilet. Why do you think dogs do this? Let us know your thoughts and they could feature in the magazine.

My greyhound Lucy cocks her leg a lot, she's a very dominant dog, so just like a lot of males I think she's trying to make herself look bigger!

Males mark their territory using urine scent. The higher they mark the better it will be percepted by other dogs.

As JohnL said, dogs mark their territory with urine, they need to get their scent to a dogs nose height where it is more likely to be carried by the wind.

I think males are just more known for cocking their leg (obviously there is a reason why they do this more than bitches) so people don't expect bitches to do the same - surely nothing is stopping bitches cocking their leg from time to time? My male dog squats like a bitch sometimes, why shouldn't bitches cock their leg from time to time? Males also start cocking their leg BEFORE they are castrated.

i think it is scent marking the higher they get it the better, also if they cock there leg then it is at 'nose' level for other dogs to smell instead of bending down, like planting a flag, but against a tree or lampost

So they can mark their scent higher up this might give the impression to other dogs that they are bigger than they are and more dominant, then the other dog won't want to take over the territory. The scent is more likely to be noticed the higher up the tree or lamppost it is.

Why does my dog Bernie squat on all fours like a girl? Because he's so top heavy, I'm pretty sure he'd topple onto his face if he cocked his leg LOL

Why does my dog Bernie squat on all fours like a girl? Because he's so top heavy, I'm pretty sure he'd topple onto his face if he cocked his leg LOL My youngest dog Kobi has always squatted like a girl to have a wee and it can't be because he has never seen a male dog cock his leg up as my oldest dog Aztec is a boy. In fact, he doesn't actually squat, he just stands there like a horse and wees!

Amber will often cock and pee out on walks to scent mark. I believe it is because they are trying to get the smell of the pee higher up - maybe so other dogs can smell it in the air more or something?!?

Jasper cocks his leg outside the garden to scent mark. Yet in the garden he always just dips his back end down. I suppose its because he knows its his home and he doesn't have to mark against other dogs. Squatting could be a sign of a less confident dog, they mightn't be as confident in 'pronouncing' themselves. Sarahhound, I learned something interesting in my Canine Development in which while in the womb, near the end of pregnancy there is a final testosterone surge that makes males, males. However, if a female foetus is developing between two males, some of the 'spill out' of the testosterone may be taken on be the female. This extra testosterone can give them more 'male' characteristics/behavioural traits, such as leg cocking I think the name is a '2M bitch' or something similar, will have to look back for proper name but its very interesting
