Don't tell him but Osiris is booked in with the vet in the morning (9 a.m.) He saw the vet last month as he's getting tats either side of the end of his back. He was identified (via an x-ray) a few years ago with a smaller space between a couple of his vertebrae than normal but no problem. The vet last month basically said that the tats are caused by Osiris not grooming himself well. Usually caused by teeth problems (the vet checked & this wasn't the issue) or arthritis - the most likely in this case. He was going to prescribe Metacam but changed it to Prednisolone (a steroid) in view of his probably kidney disease. Neither is ideal to be honest. He's nearly finished his 30 tablet (1 a day - it's amazing what you can hide in chicken if its basically tasteless ) so I want the vet to assess him as to be honest I don't think they've made any difference. I don't know where we go from here but I'm preparing for an x-ray in the morning so no food after 10:30 p.m. & no water after 7:30 a.m. If they do decide to x-ray him then I'll get them to do another blood test for his kidney's as well as he won;t let them take the blood unless he's sedated.

Poor Osiris, I won't tell him. Not too bad if he can have food up until 10.30pm. I hope all goes well at the vets. My Bramble has to have a dental on Friday and can't have food after 7.00 p.m. on Thursday - I've got to feed the cats at 10.30 p.m. without her seeing!!? And then again in the morning. Also, Kiba-Khan is going for his booster and I've booked his appointment for 3.45 p.m. and I should be able to collect Bramble at the same time (it's usually about 4-ish). An expensive start to November.

It's odd the different rules vets have for a GA lotsofcats. Ajax doesn't have to not feed overnight!! I suppose it all depends when they plan to give the GA I suppose. Ours start after the consultations around 10 to 10:30. If they haven't rung us before we can ring after 3 pm to see when to pick the patient up.

I'm not the biggest fan either molly9 but there are limited alternatives for feline arthritis, there are some supplements but I think that once its got to this stage they aren't that helpful as its the anti-inflammatory/pain relief rather than prevention that's needed. When Penny was diagnosed with CRF we stopped her Metacam but gradually her quality of life decreased due to her arthritis so we decided to start it again & the difference was marked. A difficult decision to make but we'd rather have her for a shorter time (she was 16 when we made that choice) but with her being able to enjoy her life rather than have a longer life in pain. Medrone (prednisolone) is also generally contra indicated for cats with renal conditions so catch 22. I'll be asking the vet if there is anything else that we can try. I suppose a referral to an orthopaedic specialist may be the answer. We'll see what happens tomorrow.

I know really don’t like it but I know there’s benefits that can be had as well it’s a tough one but Molly wasn’t in pain or had arthritis just 7 years of Metacam apparently because she had the calicivirus it needed keeping under control with Metacam my personal opinion is she was a money making machine 😔 I wish I’d known then what I know now and maybe I’d questioned my vet far more instead of trusting them my girl was on it way to long 7 of her 9 short years 😢 hope it’s all positive for you & your boy tomorrow x

molly9 I've not heard of Metacam of long term for caclivirus only as an anti-imflamatory/painkiller so I suppose if the virus is causing anything that needs that then fair enough. A friend of mine has a cat with the caclivirus, it manifested itself as severe gingivitis. He had a couple of Interferon courses, which made massive improvements. I think it varies from vet to vet & cat to cat.

Well I saw the vet & I've left Osiris there for an X-ray to see if its back that's causing the pain & if there's anything that can be done to help this (suspect I've been watching too much Supervet! ) also blood analysis to check his kidney levels & also they'll give him a good groom while he's out to get any tats out. It's amazing Osiris laid on the vet's consulting table & just let the vet ease out some tats which he will not let me do at home well not without having to carefully watch him for any sign of him lashing out which he will readily do. Not even a whimper from him. It's really weird his calmness in the consulting room - when they've taken him into the treatment areas in the past apparently he's turned into a complete wild cat!! will hear more around 3 p.m.

Mainly good news. X-ray showed no problems - not even the spine problem in the old x-ray!!! Blood results were all in the normal range albeit some close to the the top of the range and the groomed out the tats. Bad news he's now been prescribed Nutraquin+ supplement for arthritis & Metcam/Loxicom (need to wait a few days before starting this to get the steroid out of the system first) & go back in 4 weeks. Oh & a nice bill to pay! Poor boy was still wobbly when I picked him up at 5 pm. Obviously kept him in - used the dining-room conservatory combination having put a litter tray in there surrounded by litter mats. Gave him a very small amount of cooked chicken which he happily ate so gave him a bit more. Not long after I went to check on him again & the first thing I saw was the chicken - he'd been sick & then I saw the large puddle by the litter tray - unfortunately it was on the carpet just in front of the litter mats!!! So a bit of cleaning up to do Once that was done & sprayed with Stain & odour remover I left it to work whilst I got rid of the used kitchen roll. Went back in & Osiris was investigating the litter tray & then sat on the litter mat or rather almost sat down. then I realised his sides were straining. Yep I was right so I cleared up the solid (thank goodness) deposit so only needed to give the mat a quick spray with the odour remover & then finished off the treated carpet. He gradually improved & had some freshly cooked chicken (the previous one had been cooked a few days ago) followed by some cat food. All kept down well. By 10 he was walking fine & his eyes were back to normal so I let him out for a short while I knew he wouldn't go far and he'd be happier for some fresh air before being kept in for the night. He was rather unsettled/plaintive over night but is OK today.

I think that Osiris is has paid you back for leaving him at the vets. I hope he is feeling much better now. I dread to think how much his treatment cost.

Mind you lotsofcats that was blood test, x-ray & GA as well as the supplement which I think is somewhere between £30 & £50 for 60 capsules (can't remember what I recently paid for a box from Roman)
