Duchess killed another one, a baby one this time. I was in bed and it was dark and I saw it on the floor, it looked like a spider, I guessed what it was though.
I got up and put Duchess in the bathroom. I had to move and lift up some furniture to find the mouse. It looked like its back legs were broken by the way it struggled to move about.
I got a plastic container and got it inside. The mouse was breathing and came to life a bit when I put some cat milk on my finger,
I laid it on kitchen towel in the container and used my tablet to find an emergency vets phone number.
Sadly when I checked the mouse again there was no breathing or life and the body was colder and there was bleeding from the mouth, I know enough about death to know it had died and for me the best way was to wrap it in kitchen towel and flushed it down the loo.
If I learned anything from you people it is that is nature she is hunting for her master so I let her out of the bathroom and picked Duchess up and reassured her hugging her.
She is up on her tower now you know the one in the photo playing and it is now almost 1am I am wide awake now but I know I am tired really if that makes sense because all that was stressful but I know I did everything I could to save the poor creature but the damage was already too great and I know that nice in that situation quite often will die of heart failure due to fright, I have read it somewhere before.
I made a coffee now and got the radio on. I do let Duchess come and go in the night go but will stop that from now because she will just keep doing it.

God Less America, Dusk & dawn are the most likely hunting times so keeping Duchess in between those times is a good idea, although getting her in beforehand could be a challenge. Ours were allowed out overnight but after Roman damaged his cruciate ligament (albeit during the day) & was left with a weakened achilles tendon, I didn't want him struggling home when we were asleep & not able to help him, so we now get them in before we go to bed & let them out when we get up. After 2 years of this they now know when its time. It's not quite the same thing as stopping them hunting - they would have to be in earlier but it shows they adapt to changes in routine although I still have to go look for one of them on occasion, mainly during the summer months. Good luck in curtailing Duchess's access to the outside. It might take a while for her to accept the change but hopefully she'll appreciate it especially as the nights get colder. Edit: Typical as soon as I'd finished posting on the forum I checked & Roman was in (or to be precise in wi-fi range) so set about doing their overnight food. When I went to do the various water bowls I realised he wasn't in. I must have just missed out Ninja cat going out just before I checked where he was so was close enough for his tracker to pick him up through our wi-fi. So had to go looking for him. He was easy to find with the tracker & came to me but decided it was time to play & take cat, (not human) routes so had to keep checking where he was. I swear that he would have been grinning from ear to ear if I could see him. He kept to the bushes & only when the Loc8tor stopped beeping to signal where he was did he come out, at very high speed, before vanishing into the next garden! Osiris was only just outside so when I went out to find Roman he came in so only had to make sure he didn't get out again when Roman & I returned. Now time for all 3 puddycats & me to go to bed

Wow, I only have one cat to think about, imagine having to check on eight. I feel guilty sometimes when I update on here maybe about something or other but there isnt anyone else to tell and it's what a forum is for?
She just went out at dawn before I read about the hunting times. But she does not really ask to go out much? I will try to let her out in the afternoon time and keep her in all the other times.
As you could see from that picture she is happy in the warm and it is getting colder and I am already in thermal vests!
Duchess makes up her own games and she can amuse herself most of the time and you can't help joining in sometimes. She doesn't do any housework though and the oven could really do with a clean.

"You can own a dog but you never own a cat" is something I have heard before and maybe a lot of truth in it.

I ditto that ,and you can never post too many photos either There used to be new photos posted every day on here but when P.Bucket stopped people using their site to link their photos for free sadly its dropped off im on my ipad when on holiday and flickr doesn’t allow you to grab and copy links EITHER so my photos are now few and far between, but I did take some last night of Beau so will get them on here Sorry for the hi-jack

I bought her a tin of sardines and she demolished the bowl. I drained them so it was not too oiky and added some dry food. She is indoors now listening to Eastenders. I let her out in the morning or afternoon but not dusk or dawn like I was told because of the hunting. I grow more fond of dogs but grew up more used to cats, my favourite type of fog would be an Airedale I think. I wonder if scallywag knows this dog song...

One of my favourites is where Mark Kozelek sings about his (Siamese I woukd think or maybe Bengal) cat.
She's got big green eyes And a long Egyptian face She moves across the floor At her own pace When I'm here in bed She'll jump up on my chest And when we lock eyes there's so much love I wanna cry
She comes in near When I scratch under her ear And she lifts her head When I kiss around her neck
Won't go to sleep When she falls along my side And two green eyes fade To a porcelain marble white And somehow when I sleep She'll end up at my feet And if I roll and kick her out I might knock her to the ground But she'll come back anyhow
Ella es mi hijita (she's my little daughter) Más dulce que las cerezas (sweeter than cherries) Pura como el agua (pure as water) Con la nariz y las orejas rosas (pink nose and ears)
The morning comes She squints up to shield out the sun And she'll go and lay In the warmest dusty rays And I hold her face She lays perfectly in place And she'll yawn and stretch And stare me down expressionless And lay back down into her nest
And if someone calls She'll race me out the hall When she hears the phone Then she knows I'm leaving home She don't wanna be alone
And I know it's wrong That I'm going away so long And for her it's rough I can't be with her enough But I'll never give her up
Sus ojos brillan como el sol (eyes shine like the sun) La amo más que nadie (i love her more than anything) Con manchas de vaca (with cow pattern skin) Más suave que cochinita (softer than a piglet)
And somehow when I sleep She'll end up at my feet And if I roll and kick her out I might knock her to the ground But she'll come back anyhow

A couple of new photos. I like the way that cats tuck their paws in when they sit. Duchess has to rest after half a dish of pink salmon.
