Hello, I'm Oliver and new to the Your Pet network.
For some while now there has been a very pretty tortie in the area of our road.
We (residents) do not know if someone moved away and just left her, if she is chipped, or where she sleeps at night.
I took to feeding her outside in the beginning and we have now bonded as she knows to come down the steps (I've a basement dwelling) and the doors are open and she can feed happily and safely. She is in good condition and has a great appetite but that maybe because she is carrying and that is my concern, that she should have her babies in a nice environment, not out on the street.
I would say she most definitely was a home cat before, judging by the way she is now laid on the end of my bed. I've bought her a bed and a lovely carrier in preparation for the trip to Natterjacks, a local veterinary practice, which I must do to get her checked over.
Another issue is last evening my neighbour who is from the Czech Republic so conversation wasn't that easy, he is saying there is problem because your (my) cat is wild and has fleas and now so do his cat and dog. I have not noticed one flea yet so I was surprised and I have looked after cats before and have seen them, believe me!
So I used Google translate and wrote down in their language that I will fix it if there is a problem and pay for the treatment for his pets, also said that tomorrow Monday my 'wild' cat (a bit unfair I thoiught as she is not ferrel, simply a cat without a home) will be getting deflead and wormed.
The advice I would ask here then is about what to do next, ergo what might you do? I am out all the time and while this cat is used to that, I'm not quite in the position to take it on full-time but I would like to get her rehomed and into a better environment.
I also understand that sometimes once a cat has a particular way of life, they may not adapt back into a better one - her behaviour so far shows this as she is still tentative but has settled in well, at least she knows she has a good reliable friend.

She is a beautiful tortie and similar to my cat Kali. Firstly, you need to get her to the vet to check if she is microchipped and also healthy. Good of you to fund the flea treatment for your neighbour's pets.
Welcome to the forum.

Well he does seem to think his pets fleas are to do with Duchess (I forgot to say I have named her Duchess) and I haven't noticed one flea in my place at all. But I know better to try and resolve a problem than dispute one? Flea treatments are npt expensive and if it clears the problem and keeps the peace, what's not to like?
Yes, I would like to know if Duchess is chipped and if they can trace an owner. She seems content and settled now and I have no litter tray, as an outdoor cat she does ask to go out to do any business. I have told her she will need an umbrella today though.
I agree, I think her markings are very beautiful. I love all animals and always try to do what is best for them.

Welcome to the forum God Less America. Nice of you to take in the homeless cat. As lotsofcats said a trip to the vet to get her checked over both health & microchip. If she's not chipped or no owner can be found then if you really can't keep her then is there a local rescue centre that might take her (& her kittens)? The vets may know of a suitable organisation. Of course there is always the possibility of the Cats Protection in your area helping out.

As I am looking to move to a larger property and we have bonded so well, I would like to care for her permanently if possible.
It's 3am right now and she is out but spent most of the weekend here indoors owing to the wet and windy weather.
Once she gets back in I will put her in the carrier and taxi up to the vets. I think her delivering her litter is close judging by the bulk? I am not sure of the duration of a feline pregnancy.
I certainly would have no idea what to do if she had them here although there is bound to be instructions on the internet I guess to get through the dilemma.
I will update Duchess's progress as it happens!

I spoke with a neighbour just now who was able to fill in some blanks. This cat appraently originally lived two doors down with a Polish family. She already has had one litter and the guy next door kept one of the kittens. But the owners do not care. They started letting the kittens out on the street too soon and clearly couldn't care less about Duchess and the neighbour I spoke to told me it's why Duchess doesn't bother going there and we know a cat will go to the hand that feeds, yes but to the person or persons they know love them.
So it;s almost time for the Monday morning laundry run and we will go to the vets afterwards in a taxi and see what they have to say. It may be that Duchess will have her family here but long-term I would like her spayed and chipped as for a cat so young it is not good that she has had two litters already.
Will keep you posted!

I didn't realise that Duchess was expecting kittens! How awful that her 'owners' can't be bothered to have her spayed and chipped and let her kittens out too soon. A cat will choose a loving new owner to go to when they are in need and you were her choice. Try to keep her in if you think her kittens are due very soon. You will need to buy a litter tray and cat litter. You should also buy kitten food to feed to a pregnant cat as it has more nutrients in it that are good for the mum-to-be. Good luck at the vets.

Sound advice and kind words there, thank you.
I am in a difficult situation because I myself am trying to move home and also have many work commitments.
There is a lady coming here tomorrow morning to have a look at Duchess and we will decide what to do for the best.
In my heart I know we are happy with each other and love each other as only cat lovers like you will understand.
But I will always do what I think is best for an animal and if I can find her a better situation and away from this area which isn't the best TBH and she can be offered security comfort and a fresh start I would not deny her that.
Duchess is out at the minute but always comes here, like she knows this is a place where she is safe and that makes me feel good.
I will update with developments further.

So there have been developments! When I got home this evening, Duchess was about and I fed her but she seemed to be off whatever food I prepared and anxious and making strange growling sounds, still so affectionate to me however, I eventually had her chillled and purring on my bed but it seemed obvious from observing her teets being very dilated and the fact that she was looking for places within the flat, these kittens were on the way.
I had been in touch with Cats Protection and a lady called Joanna I telephoned and she drove over to take a look. We decided the best thing was that one of the helpers within their network would give Duchess a proper home for her to have her babies in safety and comfort and possibly to return here where she knows the area and knows also that I have a place for her to call home.
I pray to God that I have done the right thing although in hindsight now, I am thinking that I have done the right thing for her but for me too. I have autism and can easily be distracted and stressed and whilst my love for animals holds no boundaries, I chose to do the best for Duchess - by the way she responds to this name now.
I would love to see her kittens some day and hope that Duchess will make a return here, meanwhile Joanna promised to update me this evening and in tuen I will update on this thread,
I understand it's not a busy forum but maybe that's a good thing - you get noticed! Thanks for the help and advice so far, God bless.

You have done the right thing. Hopefully the Cats Protection League will find homes for the kittens, get Duchess spayed and let you have her back. I hope they keep in touch with you.

Yes I have! You remember that night when she was restless and I called for help? Duchess started delivering just five hours later and had five babies and is doing well and the lady said she is a great mother although I could tell that anyway.
But when she took her though and she did say to me this is how we do it, she had picked Duchess up by the scruff of her neck to place her in the cat carrier - I didn't like that.
One of my support workers wpoke with the yesterday and I think if the owners can't be traced then I can claim Duchess and I would like her here in the area she knows and she will be spayed of course and the Cats Protection can home the kittens.
I was thinking last night how I would love to see her and the kittens but I don't think that would be possible, I mean you're not allowed near to the mother cat when they've got kittens are you?
