I have discovered this week that Panda has a dislocating patella in her R knee. Only started happening this week. I'd be really glad to hear from anyone who has experience with this problem, apparently common in small breeds. Any advice would be appreciated.

Arrr so sorry to hear this ☹️I have no experience on this so unfortunately can’t offer you any advice, but i’m sure somebody will be able to offer you some advice. How did Panda do this ? Is it a injury?

Poor Panda - will she have to have an operation? I have no experience of this injury sorry. Hopefully there is someone on the forum who knows about it.

Sorry to hear about Panda jassycat1. I can't provide any help other than to suggest using the search function of the forum (in the menu bar above the thread) & use patella as the word. I just did it & there were only 2 pages of individual posts containing that word. You could then read any relevant threads & perhaps try to contact any who had similar problems or helpful answers. Not all are still active members but you never know you might pick up some info anyway from the threads involved or try & contact those who had the problem. (tag in a post or use a PM)

Thanks tonib . Will do. Not an injury, a developmental problem as they grow. Apparently a lot of little dogs have shallow grooves where the patella sits. I think she may need an operation to deepen the groove, poor little girl, but not sure. Seeing the vet tomorrow. It happens about once a day, just for the last week. She holds the right rear leg off the ground for a short time, then puts it back down and runs around like nothing is wrong the rest of the day. I put my hand on it, and I could feel the patella move across as it came good.

Poor Panda, unfortunately I don't have any experience with locating patellas either although I know it usually involves an operation. My friend's JRT was suspected to have one but the vet told her that they wouldn't operate unless it was a grade 3 one. Now, I don't really know what that means but his turned out not to be that anyway, it was his cruciate ligament. But I found it interesting that the vets said they wouldn't operate until it was worse/the dog was older.

Yes lotsofcats she is insured, but guess what - luxating patella is so common in small breeds that all the insurers specifically exclude it! The good new is the vet said today that he wouldn't do anything at this age (9- 10 months) as it is only grade 1 and he thinks she may grow out of it. He has given an injection called cartrophin to encourage cartilage growth (and 3 more to go at weekly intervals) and meloxicam for inflammation and told me to walk her up hills a lot to strengthen the hind legs. (Hey, wait - that means I have to walk up hills too...)

(Hey, wait - that means I have to walk up hills too...) Could be wrong ! But cazypops is this similar to Jaspers treatment ? Being the injections and cartrophin. When Beau was being diagnosed for his first cruciate rupture they pointed out Beaus joint was also shallow and could be popping out as there was too much side movement there. We decided not to have surgery to deepen the groove h im not using right wirds but hope your getting the picture ? ) that was over 3 years ago and hes had no problem with that leg. Good luck jassycat1 EDIT Did a search , here you go ..
Poor Millie cazypops Jasper has those injections from memory fir his hip . Think its twicea year . Good luck and hope it works, I agree re retiring Millie for a while, we just dont know how much pain our pets are in do we boxerluver30 yep sameplace x Yes your right scallywag . Jasper gets a cartrophen injection twice a year. If I remember right he had one injection every week for three weeks then once a month for six months, now once every six months. It worked brilliantly for him. He went from not weight bearing on his back leg and muscle wastage, to a dog you'd never know was anything wrong with him, as tonib can testify to. Don't get me wrong, there are times when he still needs a dose of Loxicom, like when we've been out for a long walk and he's over done it, and you can see he's walking a bit stiff. But at only £15 every six months, it's not much to pay for a good quality of live. Hope it helps Millie as much as it's helped Jasper milliepup04 .

Typical of insurance companies to exclude luxating patella jassycat1. Glad that the vet has an answer. Get walking up those hills!!

Petplan does not exclude dislocating patelae, unless problems with knees were reported before insurance was taken out.
I shall log in later and give you my experience.

zahada, nice to see you here, you've been missed. Just thought I'd mention that Jassycat1 is in Australia (not sure you've seen her past posts) so the insurers may well have different rules but I'm sure your experience will be much appreciated

Sorry to hear panda has a luxating patella jassycat1. I have no experience of it either but I hope it is just a developmental problem and it doesn't cause issues when she is older. Oh and hi zahada
