Osiris didn't want his breakfast this morning, some days he needs encouragement to actually eat the renal food but he wasn't even going near his bowl. He eventually laid on the cushion on the living room windowsill sometimes flat & others hunched over. Later I tried him with some cooked chicken (his favourite) but he obviously wanted it but didn't want to eat it. He was licking his lips & was occasionally drooling. So took him to the vets this afternoon,th inking that his (possible) kidney disease was making him nauseous. t
We saw the vet who did Roman's cruciate op, who is currently a locum at the practice having returned to his home country for personal reasons but is very happy to have irregular work as a locum for our practice (& a few others when here) with the money being very welcome to his family at home. I like him & he has a good, practical approach.
Osris's temperature was normal & the vet couldn't feel anything obvious in his abdomen. Then he checked his teeth - a bad case of dental disease. Now Osiris's teeth were commented on when he had his vaccinations in January but that vet said it didn't need the dental work yet. Only 6/7 weeks later its bad & there is the possibility of extractions!
He's booked in for the work tomorrow. I've also suggested, for their own safety, that his claws are clipped before they do any work, as he usually lets them do that then but can get stressed later and he can be handy with his claws.
He's had dental work in 2012, 2014, 2016 & 2017 He had noticeable gingivitis when we got him from the rescue in 2008 aged just under 2 years old. so he's not done too badly (but it could be better) in his 12 years.
I did ask the vet to give Osiris an anti-emetic injection & he was wanting food when we got home about 15-20 minutes later!!! Also asked if it was worth doing renal blood tests as he is supposed to be going back for them 6 months after the last lot (November) but he thought not as the 1st results were only just a bit high & the 2nd test normal (but at the higher end).
So on balance a mix of good (not a renal issue) & bad (needing dental work). Although I doubt Osiris will see it that way especially as either way he's at the vets tomorrow for an anaesthetic so no food from 10 pm tonight!
