I am having real problems with my 1 year old cat when it comes to bedtime.
He is extremely needy and wont leave the room we are in and if he does he scratches all night to get in.
Once in he wants to be on our faces, licking and sucking at our noses, cheeks and mouth. If we put the covers over our faces he pushes and nudges his very hardest to make his way to our faces.
He did this as a kitten also and it got a bit better but now its at its worst.
He walks around making pigeon noises and doesn't want to play just wants to be near us but it prevents us from sleeping AT ALL because its constant.
During the day he doesn't want to know us, its only at night time that he is like this.
We have recently moved house so haven't had our cat flap fitted yet so i'm hoping next week when we have that done it may help. I have considered keeping him in the kitchen, dining and utility room at night to prevent him from getting to us but we also have a dog who has access to these and doesn't come upstairs at all as he isn't allowed so I would rather our cat did have some of his own space from the dog rather than being confined together at night.
Any suggestions how to help our cat relax a bit more at night and allow us to get some sleep?
It's just completely natural cat behaviour Cats are a crepescular predator and sleep mostly during the day and become more active at dusk and dawn (and often during the night ~ ironically when us humans are biologically programmed to sleep! ) I remember seeing a Jackson Galaxy 'My Cat From Hell' tv programme (Animal Planet on Sky tv) about this very same issue and found the video below which will hopefully help. I think once your boy is able to go out he'll not be any bother as he'll then be able to 'be a cat' and fulfil his natural instincts Man thing is to NEVER punish him....cats have only really been intensively domesticated as our indoor pets a very tiny space of time (I'd say less than 150 years) compared to the dog which has been thousands so they're still pretty much a wild predator given half the chance.
My own 10-month old boy Loki has a habit of jumping on he bed and plonking a big wet nose onto my mouth and eyes at 4am and you simply CAN NOT ignore it as he purrs loudly and head butts me at the same time I'm afraid to admit I do EVERYTHING that Jackson says don't *blush* and get up, feed him and then go back to bed and am asleep once more in minutes But that's just me.....soft as clarts
