We've let him out on his own for the first time today, I suspect I'm going to be a nervous wreck over the next week or so. His cruciate seems fine but there is the issue of his hock & probably Achilles tendon partial stretching which means he's not in as much control of his hock joint as he should be, it tends to straighten easily but seems harder to keep bent up. It was the vets advise to let him go out & see.
At the moment the weather is fine albeit windy & we have had showers so not too bad for his first outing since the injury in February other than on his harness & lead.
We've got him a real-time GPS locator as I am concerned that he could wander well away after being stuck in so long & if his tendon gave way we might have difficulty finding him. He's got that & his Loc8tor on his collar (sorry boy but it shouldn't be too heavy for you)
He was gone about 10 minutes & was then back in. I watched him go through the cat flap - he tried to put the bad hind foot first, after the front hald of him was through & couldn't get it to quite bend up to step on to the cat flap edge. He worked out to change legs & got through fine. It was painful to watch. He went over the fence at the back, but not sure how he came back whether round the road or back over the fence. He went out again - but still only local (a couple of houses & back) - he managed the catflap out but so far hasn't used it back in he's waited until we opened the door.
Our confident boy isn't too confident at the moment - not surprising really. I still want to keep them in overnight, at least for a while yet until we're confident that hes not going to injure himself further. Could be difficult - we may have to go & fetch him home, As the Loc8tor is still on him he will be used to coming when that's used - I hope - if he doesn't come when we call him from nearby.
He's been on a conservatory chair snoozing for the last hour or so but that isn't unusual behaviour, he ws more of an outdoor cat in the evening & night these last year or so, snoozing the day at home as well as part of the night. I think he's maturing at around 12 years old.
