Well sorry i Have not been on for a while but i thought i would just give you a update on our little Freddy (not so little now) he is 12 months old now and a right little character. I have booked a vet appt tonight because Freddy seems to have been off for a few days now.I suspect he may have a UTI. On Saturday every time i picked him up he was meowing he seemed to be in some pain but Sunday morning he seemed much better. But he wouldn't settle last night and he had me up from 4:30am i Have also noticed he is using his litter box for a wee much more than normal but only doing little bits he just dosen't seem himself. I'm wondering if it could be anything to do with his diet has i have recently changed his dry food from Go cat to Wainwrights light due to him putting on a extra few pounds. when i took him to the vets last week for a weight check the vet was really pleased he had lost 400gms. He isn't too over weight but he is a small male and the vet advised me to try and get him to drop a few pounds so he didn't go into the obesity scale. It is so difficult with him because he is constantly on look out for food he even piches Riley's Dentastix if given the chance.I bought a treat ball from the vets to put some of his biscuits in at supper time and that is working really well. He also wakes really early in a morning anything from 4:30 am . i normaly give him some biscuits from his daily allowance in his treat ball then he as his wet food when riley gets up for his breakfast. Any advice or tips would be much appreciated

Poor Freddy, it does sound like he needs to see the vet. Do you think he drinks enough? Also, does he have too many biscuits? - too much dry food can start problems. Good that he's lost a bit of weight. Some cats can be really greedy and there's not much you can do to change him if he's that way. Out of my 7 cats I have 2 that are really greedy and like Freddy, they will always be on the lookout for food. My dog is the same too. I don't know what to say about Freddy getting up so early in the morning - my lot don't do that, thank goodness.

Thanx lotsofcats freddy drinks quite a lot of water much more than my late cat but he does have dry food,so I'm not concerned that he isn't drinking enough. lucky for you yours don't get you up early he is a nightmare he is awake from 4:30am onwards I normally get up and give him some biscuits in his treat ball then sometimes he will settle back down but this morning he just meowed from 5am until 6am until I just gave in and got up with him he then was flaked out on the bed this morning when I left for work hubby says it is worse than having a new baby so if anyone has any advice it would be very much appreciated. I will let you know how I get on at the vets tonight.

Well I took Freddy to the vets tonight and the vet has prescribed some inflammatory medication for cystitis ,he has also lost a little bit more weight so I am pleased. They have also prescribed wet and dry prescription food Hills for weight control and urinary problems .it may be something that he will be on for a short while or long term. I will mow have to do some research online to see if I am able to order is food online or only through the vet.so I am hoping things improve for him now he has some painkillers. The vet didn't seem to think he needed any antibiotics.

Hi chantel I've seen this many, many times with cats and with past experience its usually due to high carb dry food (which most cat light diets consist of!) it generally starts off with UTI's and cystitis but it can develop into bladder/kidney stones and urinary blockages. I don't want to undermine your vet's advice....but usually over-priced prescription diets aren't neccessary. My advice (you don't need to take it) is find a high quality wet food (low or no carb with high quality protein) and if you must feed dry biscuits, seriously moderate them. The wet food will keep Freddy's urine PH normal without becoming too alkaline and produce more urine which will flush his kidneys reguarly and help to prevent crystals, bacteria etc from developing. Its also the dry food that puts the weight on cats, so more wet food will assist with the weight loss.

Thanks Gypsy I will take your advice in to account. Maybe that is something we can look at once he has finished this food.i'm going to try and give him wet more than dry. Although I can't do away with dry completely has I normally give him just a few dry for supper and when he wakes at 4:30.i have already replaced his cat milk at supper with a few biscuits and that seems to work well.he is just constantly on look out for food.but he had lost a little more weight again which is good.
Thank you for your advice any advice is much appreciated I know quite a lot about dogs but I'm not that up on cats although I am just in the process of doing a feline firstaid course.

You can buy the Hills prescription food online from Zooplus and I'm sure it will be much cheaper than from the vets. I buy a lot of my cat food and litter from Zooplus or their other company called Bitiba. Bitiba tend to be a bit cheaper as you don't get points to save for rewards as with Zooplus. You get free delivery if you spend over £29.

Sorry to hear Freddy had to have a vet visit chantel, but glad it wasn't serious. In answer to one of your questions you can definitely get all the veterinary diets online from a wide variety of suppliers including the obvious m3edicine companies, including some that would surprise you e.g fetch.co.uk (the pet arm of ocado)! Also zooplus & bitiba (the cheaper but a higher free delivery charge version of zooplus) Despite having 2 out of our 3 cats who eat varying proportions of dried to wet we've been lucky with no urinary problems. We've now got Roman on Royal Canin Light & Appetite Control dried along with RC light moist or Felix ordinary pouches as this winter he put on weight (he's around 12) but didn't lose it & the vets want his weight down as that could have been one of the reasons behind his cruciate ligament injury. His problem is he often only eats the jelly from the moist but loves his kibble. As he's an oudoor cat he definitely supplements his meals with hunting (not sure how much though) so very difficult to monitor his intake. Luckily the cruciate incarceration is helping us get on top of his weight he's already lost 0.5Kg - the first target (back to his long-term weight but the vet thinks another 0.5Kg sould be good.) We also had Penny on Royal Canin kidney kibble (she didn't like the Hills) & had no trouble getting the food online. As to the 4:30 a.m. wake up was that happening over winter or is it related to the time of dawn now its earlier? Luckily ours, when forced to be kept in overnight have been patient once they've settled but they also have food available all the time - assuming they haven't eaten their portion (we use microchip feeders so they can only access their own bowls. If you can't break the 4:30 habit, is it worh investing in a timed feeder so that you can Freddy a little kible timed for 4:30 a.m. so that he doesn't have to disturb you.

Thanks Tonib i am going to do some research online.as for the 4:30am i think it is maybe due to it been light early in a morning.but the problem is that once i have given him a few biscuits he just screams and screams out side our bedroom door i think it is mainly that he wants me up for company.although it has been 5:50am for the past 2 mornings i can cope with that.so i'm not sure a automatic feeder would really help.sometimes he dosen't even seem that bothered about food he is just a early riser. Thank you for your help it is much appreciated.
