Molly will be enjoying her birthday at Rainbow Bridge & wishing you well for tomorrow. She is a lovely looking cat & its no wonder that you miss her, just like all of who have had their pets taken too early (it always is too early for us pet servants ) molly9, I'm assuming that tomorrow your complaint is being processed in some way. Hope all goes well for you. Do let us know what happens, if you can.

As you know we had meeting with Molly's vets Practice Manager & what I was told has left me more angry than ever, basically they never carried out regular Metacam checks with Molly which I already knew, they don't carry out blood & urine checks on cats on Metacam because apparently its not practical they would have to carry out hundreds, they only pre check a cat about to be prescribed Metacam if they were 12 or older and then wouldn't do regular check ups, they would not hesitate on putting a young cat on Metacam. She believes Metacam didn't cause Molly's kidney failure it was a kidney infection that damaged them and was very sudden but on all Molly's insurance claims it states Molly died of chronic kidney failure forgive me if I'm wrong but I was thought that took months if not years to develop, also the most damning thing was that Molly's vet took the decision of quality over quantity many years ago without any discussion with me first, she was sympathetic but apparently I have to accept that Molly was always going to die young, I am furious the official complaint has now gone into Royal Veterinary College Of Surgeons so I'm waiting on them, I don't know the regulations on the prescribing of Metacam or if there are any, getting any honest information on this seems impossible , vets seem have a blind faith with this drug, however that aside the important decisions they made with Molly's life without any discussion with her owner is completely unacceptable

Sorry to hear about that interview outcome molly9. I understand your anger. Not sure if I mentioned this before but luckily our vet made us aware of the balance between benefits & risks of long-term Metacam, when Penny was put on it around 6 years ago & yes she was diagnosed with CRF in 2015 & not long after with Hyperthyroidism. We lost her to those diseases in March this year aged nearly 17. We were never offered regular blood test for her kidneys & as you say the CRF is only usually recognised by the symptoms which take a while to show. She was regularly checked every 6 months but that was the normal check-up for repeat prescriptions although of course her kidneys were felt. the only blood tests she had were at the diagnosis of CRF time. However in her case she had to be sedated to take the blood & I can't see that being good for her on a regular basis either. As I said its a balancing trick not just on prescribing but also on health checking. As far as I understand it Metacam doesn't cause kidney disease but can increase the chance of it developing if the cat has the potential to develop it anyway. There is a difference between CRF & Acute kidney failure, the latter being caused by toxins or infection, but I wouldn't know which was correct in your case. Having said all that you should have been clearly advised of the risks at the start of the long-term usage. I hope you get a satisfatory answer to your complaint to the RCVS. Good luck.

That's a great picture of Molly the blue toy helps show off her glossy black fur. Was she semi-long hair molly9? I thought she was a short-hair but that tail looks really fluffy.
