The vet visit went reasonably well, he's stitch free, claws clipped - they were catching on things - seen to walk (sort of around the consulting room. The down side is his injured leg's paw was colder than the other hind & the vet was concerned that, as can happen with soft tissue ops, he might have thrown a thromboembolism. However he also said that in most cases of this happening the leg is not able to be used just dragged. This was not the case for Roman so although a risk the vet didn't think this was the case but I could see the head vet if I wanted to but I trust this one so we'll see.
Roman proceeded to wander around the room looking interestedly through the vertical glass panel in the door from consulting room to office. He definitely is not walking right yet - more a crawl or a 3 legged run but its early days. then the silly boy suddenly decided to jump back on to the examination table, unfortunately we weren't quick enough & he didn't quite make it & dropped back to the floor - rather surprised, but OK.
Antibiotics finish today but the Metacam is to continue until we see the vet again in 2 weeks. Oh & he's down to 5.9 Kg (0.2Kg lost in 2 weeks) a start in the right direction but still some way to go.
He's now cone less & spent the day out of his crate in our "isolation ward" but is rather nervous, hiding behind chairs before eventually snoozing on a couple, so much for getting to have a bit more exercise. He's back in his crate now.
The good news was his paw was warm when we got home so I wonder if it was colder due having been his top one when he laid on his side in the carrier as the other one would also have been warmer as it was laid on. We'll just have to keep an eye on that.

Sounds like alls going as it should Toni ? was surprised thou that hes being allowed to jump ? surely the inside had to bind to the new ligament ? or is it different with cats than dogs gypsy ? Roman you behave now and no more scares for your mum and dad or you'll be back in that cell

You have to keep a beady eye on the little tinkers all the time cos the split second you don't is when the little horrors do something like jump up or off which, I'll swear, has your heart stop for a few seconds! (((BIG HUGS))) to darling Roman in his enforced incarceration.....it's a shame we cannot explain that it's for their own good, isn't it? Does the vet have any idea what could have caused the ligament damage?

Well that all sounds positive. I'm sure that Roman is grateful to be let out of prison even for a few hours at a time into the isolation ward.

gill, the vet's only suggestion on what could have caused it was jumping down & landing awkwardly, especially as he is overweight. His annual winter plump up this year wasn't just a small amount & a lot of thick fur!! He normally weighs in with a max of 5.6Kg but was 6.1 when he did the injury - he was 5.9 on Monday. thought that was quite good then wondered how much the fur weighed that he had shaved off - maybe it wasn't so good as I thought! He thanks everyone for his good wishes. The only thing that concerns me now is he seems to have some bouts of pain somewhere - not sure if its his leg or not - for no apparent reason. Its like he's been bitten by something as he cries out & jerks. Just now he cried out& shot up from his cushion in the crate & went to lay at the other end. It can happen anywhere he's laying so can't work it out. Think I'm going to speak to the vet tomorrow or at least email him. Unfortunately we can't get a video as there's no rhyme or reason or timing to get the camera ready.

How is the patient today? Is Roman still having his bouts of sudden pain tonib? Did you contact the vet about it?

He's full of beans lotsofcats - not ideal given he's not to be jumping around! Yesterday he had a lot fewer occasions of the sudden starts so I didn't contact the vet & he's had even fewer today. It's weird when it happens - its like he's stung. I was describing it to Elaine (Ajax) & she suggested a nerve pain rather than an wound pain (it reminded her of when she had shingles!) He's gradually increasing his inclination to use the leg rather than walk on 3 (he's very fast on 3 so we've got to keep a watchful eye on him when out of the crate!) It's weird watching him - its sort of walk, hop, walk, hop. he's never been a lap cat but he's happily (albeit plotting an escape) to be on my lap for an hour or more each day.

Glad to hear that he is feeling better and I hope that the sudden pains ease off. Great that he's becoming a lap cat - it must be his way of saying thank you; I'm sure he realises that all you are doing for him is for his own good. I expect he will try another escape soon.

The op wound is looking OK & his fur is just beginning to grow back, its a very soft down at the the moment. 20160313 Healing nicely P1040226 by osiriscat, on Flickr I can't believe how thick his fur was - you can really see it in this photo 20160313 P1040231 by osiriscat, on Flickr He's still on crate rest but we are allowing him out - mainly supervised in the conservatory/dining-room combination. He's still moving quickly on 3 legs but is walking on 4 although not a smoothly as he used to - he's still got a way to go. We've a vet visit tomorrow morning, 2 weeks after the stitches were taken out, so we'll see what the vet says.

The vet visit went well. He didn't walk well, mind you that was not due to his injury more he just kept very low to the ground for about 2 foot & then laid down under the table & wasn't moving for anyone!!! The vet doesn't want to see him again for 6 weeks & his Metacam is reduced to half measures. It was quite funny as the vet didn't lift Roman out the carrier but opened it up fully so he was just laid in the bottom half on the table. No problem but I had to put it together again but before I could Roman was lifted back on to the table after seeing him walk. So he quickly walked round the front grill (which was still attached to the base) & laid down again in his carrier - he definitely wanted to go home!! The vet hadn't finished the exam so he was lifted out whilst I put the carrier back together securely. He's allowed to jump a little (low chair seats) as he needs to develop his muscles again. One thing I didn't know was that cats are more likely to have problems with implants as foreign bodies but Roman seems to be dealing with it OK at the moment. Spoke to the hydrotherapist & she said she'd had a wowrd with the head vet & he'd advised trying Roman in the bath at home with lukewarm water first to see how he went. If he was happy (ish) then they'd might try hydrotherapy. Poor boy is going to be stir crazy if he's still incarcerated for another 6 weeks

I've been thinking about trying Roman with a harness (he did have one for his first couple of outings into the garden when we first got him) so he could go out for a brief walk as he progresses. Trying to stop him going stir crazy. He's quite strong so I have a feeling that the original harness won't be ideal especially as I've heard about cat's backing out of harnesses. lotsofcats I seem to remember you got one of the Mynwood harnesses for one of your cats (Kai Ruki or Kiba Khan) What did you think to them? I realise that I'll need to get him used to a harness & then lead again but it could also be useful indoors as we move him between the crate & the "isolation ward" until he's able to do stairs etc. As we have bodily to block his access at the moment as all he wants to do is shoot upstairs & you can see him judging how to do it - which gap to get through or whether to jump anything!

Poor chap. He is a gorgeous boy though. Henry hid from the window cleaners today so he's under my bed next to Georgia who is hiding out in her igloo
