This morning I let him walk between the living-room & the "isolation ward" he was quite speedy but it was only on 3 legs he was not putting his left hind on the floor at all. I think he's got more confidence on 3 but obviously not happy about the bad leg, so at the moment its still x-ray on Friday. But he's got 7 hours before starvation deadline for that to change. I'll check him again this evening & in the morning - oh crikey an early start (for me) as he's to be at the hospital between 8:30 & 9 so I'll have to leave home around 8 having given him a chance to show me his walk etc.

Hope it all turns out okay, but it's maybe better he does get the X-ray just in case even if he does start to walk on the other leg, just so you can see what the underlying cause is.

I've checked back & it was the same leg he had problems with in 2012. Old YC forum members may remember. On 30th April 2012 he came home on 3 legs with a cat bite in the base of his foot (almost at the heel). That resulted in being kept in on antibiotics & Metacam but by 4th May he was still in pain, they then shaved the area & found it was deeper than first seen so prescribed antibiotics for another 8 days but no more Metacam & it healed nicely & he was let out 13th May. However on 1st June he came in with damaged front claws but no other damage but we did keep him in as there was a likelihood that he'd either been in a fight and/or an arguement with the ground in some way although couldn't see any other injuries. But on the 4th he was badly limping on his left hind! Prescribed Metacam & keep in. By 8th he was no better so & prescribed crate rest & continue Metacam. On 11th still limping so x-rayes but nothing found so continue crate rest & Metacam. By the 18th he was hardly limping so vet sad 1 more week crate rest & then 1 week house arrest. But on 25th when we changed him to house arrest he was still limping so back to crate & vets on 26th where they booked him for possible x-rays & exploratory op. on 28th. The more senior vet doubled checked the original x-rays & decided no more needed but with the op. they found an inflamed tendon sheath which they cleaned out but didn't find any abscess or foreign body. So cage rest again with cone of shame. As he was sick the next day (inside the collar ) he was then given anti-ausea meds on 2nd July he was given antibiotics for 7 days but no more anti-nausea. On th the stitches were removed with Metacam for 4 days & his full weight dose & then a minimum dose for 4 days. He was also allowed house arrest (not crate) until finally on 17th July he was let out. So that was crate rest from 8th June -9th July & house arrest from 1st - 8th June & then 9th - 17th July I think this is what makes me a bit more concerned over this as it seems similar to that. I hope not & that the vet is right he's just strained/jarred his leg in jumping down from somewhere but ....... Fingers crossed

It's great that you have all the information about this, might be worth reminding your vets that it seems like the same issue. Hopefully it turns out not to be though.
Poor guy, he's certainly been through the wars a bit!

I'm not sure it is the same issue - as it seems to be his knee this time but I'm just hoping he doesn't have to go through the same sort if thing again, long(ish) crate rest, ops etc.

If it's his knee tonib is it possible he's done his cruciate ligament in? Hope all goes well tomorrow, and you get to the bottom of the problem . X

Having read all the dog post over the years it is something I've considered but I would have thought the vet would have found that on checking the movement. However you never know.

cazypops can you be our vet please! You were right the vets have just phoned while Roman was still under anaesthetic & (after our agreement) they are now operating & putting an implant in to replace his ruptured cruciate ligament. The vets words were it will have been very painful for him so they want to continue straight away - it was only a brief talk so that Roman would have the least amount of time under the anaesthetic. Poor boy - he would have been in pain & now will have to suffer more crate rest. Not quite sure how long for & having read about scallywag's Beau having to have limited exercise gradually increasing not sure how that works with cats especially outdoor ones. I have a feeling that he will be limited to our "isolation ward" during the day & the crate at night once he's off full crate rest, until he's allowed to do stairs at which point we can keep everyone in of an evening/night (Osiris is the one most affected) & let Roman have the roam of the house at night. But the vet does believe he will make a full recovery & have no problem with going out again. It will be an interesting bill at the end of this - I've been quoted figures for the op. & I'm assuming that will be on top of the x-ray cost. However we're lucky it won't be a problem.

Oh poor Roman. I wish him a speedy recovery but I feel it's going to be a long one. At least we know he has the best care with you. He is not going to be a happy Roman for a while. Well done to cazypops for diagnosing the problem. Let us know how he is when you get him home.

Just had a phone call from the original vet (another rang me with the news earlier) & she said she was so sorry she'd just heard about Roman & that I'd been right! Apparently he's doing Ok but I've got to ring back later (after 3 pm) & there is the possibility he may have to stay in overnight. Poor boy.

Glad Roman's doing okay after his op. If he has to stay in overnight does a vet stay overnight with them to check on the pets? - I don't like to think of Roman all alone.

Its a 24hour veterinary hospital lotsofcats - they even provide out of hour cover for other vet practices as well so no he won't be alone

That's okay then. My vets do the same thing but not at their usual practice, it's one about 10 miles away and when I took Blackberry there they 'delivered' her back the next day to my vet's practice.

Goodness! You must be so relieved to finally know what's causing all this at least I suppose. Wishing him all the best, it will be a long recovery I'm sure, but he'll get there, and you will get loads of support here I'm sure as a growing number of people on here seem to have gone through cruciate injuries!

That's okay then. My vets do the same thing but not at their usual practice, it's one about 10 miles away and when I took Blackberry there they 'delivered' her back the next day to my vet's practice. Our vets are similar lotsofcats, they have 3 branch surgeries as well as the hospital. We live about 1/2 way between 2 of the branches each only just over 5 minutes away & about 15-20 minutes away from the hospital. The 4th (newer branch) also does minor ops but no overnight stays & is about 20-25 minutes away - only been there once. The will happily take the pet at the branches & deliver them to the hospital & back again if necessary. There is a rota for the vets so they all attend the various branches through the week. So I'm happy to take the cats to any one of them so that I can get an appointment when I need to or with whoever if if I want to follow something through. The vet nurses though are only at the hospital & the new surgery which does minor ops.
