After Calypso was diagnosed with UTI I knew I had to try and get her to drink more water. I have dishes of water around, plus a water fountain but she just is not a great water drinker. I changed both their diets over to wet and added a little of Applaws chicken and pumpkin as Oliver Twist was a little constipated but I watered it down too and Calypso loves drinking it - result and O.T. - no more constipation - result. Yes, it is important to get cats to drink more water especially if constipated and like Calypso with UTI. With Bramble I rarely see her drink so I'm going to add a bit of water to her wet food. Actually, I should do it to Kiba-Khan's food too.

Hey there, have you had any luck with feeding pumpkin to help with Sams constipation? I'm just interested to see if it has any effects, for if mines ever have constipation in the future. I know some of the dog owners on this forum give their dogs fresh pumpkin and also pumpkin which they have acquired fresh then made into ice cubes to store it longer term, which is a great idea, I think they generally just feed it as a dietary supplement though rather than specifically against constipation, but I could be wrong, and of course a cats digestive system is different to that of a dogs, and isn't as good at digesting plant material so will probably affect its usefulness in this case!

So far, I have not needed to use it. A couple of weeks ago, Sam had dental surgery to remove the last of her back teeth and clean the others. Since then (and probably because she can taste food properly again) she does not like the Hills K/D food, so I have switched her back to Purina One dry food, which she always used to have. She also has Purina Gold Senior wet food. The constipation issue seems to have largely gone away since switching her diet. However, the latest problem is recurring bouts of cystitis - sometimes inability to wee, and other times weeing all over the place. She is currently at the vets for a bladder scan and urine testing.

Poor Sam - see my thread on my cat Bramble - she had to have a bladder scan and urine testing but her symptoms were blood in her urine and she doesn't appear to have problems having a wee. Poor Bramble had to have dye injected into her bladder for a clear x-ray and it was found that her bladder is fine and the problem is with her kidneys. I hope that the correct treatment for Sam is found quickly and that she gets better soon. Does she drink enough now that she has more dried food in her diet? I've been adding a bit of water to Bramble's wet food.

I've been adding a bit of water to Bramble's wet food. Yes she drinks plenty. The amount of dry food she is eating is still about the same (~20g/day) along with one 85g tin of the wet food per day. I found she was eating progressively less and less of the K/D food (< 5g), so it seemed pointless to continue with it.

Hi @cs2015 glad to hear the constipation issue seems to have gone away. Fingers crossed that the bladder scan doesn't reveal anything nasty. If Sam was on K/D but now doesn't like it it may be worth trying the Royal Canin renal diet. Our Penny didn't like the Hills at all, Animed Direct do a Palatability Pack of RC Renal food (its the only place I've found it). Penny likes the dried but not keen on the wet but I've got a few other wet renal foods to give her from zooplus (a number are german). However another option is to add a phosphorous binder such as Ipakatine to her food (especially the non-renal) - perhaps have a word with your vet. You're right that its better for Sam to eat rather than give her something that may be good for her but she won't eat! Like lotsofcats I also give extra water in Penny's food despite drinking plenty but that also because she seems to prefer any wet food quite moist, odd really as she loves her dried!!!!

Thanks for the tips on the renal food.
The bladder scan showed nothing abnormal and no bladder stones. The urine test showed no protein or red blood cells present, but some white blood cells, so there may be some infection. It will take about 48 hours for the full results to come back.

@cs2015 Sounds promising, hopefully they can find the infection & treat it quickly

Just had the results back from the vet, and there is a bacterial infection. The vet has prescribed a 14 day course of antibiotics.

That's good news @cs2015 that the vets have found the problem & you've got the meds. Hope Sam is a good medicine taker
