Hi Everyone
Sorry this is a bit of a long story so I'll try to condense it as much as possible. Basically my baby Sox got unwell around 8 weeks ago now, initially it started out very similar to cat flu. She had a snotty nose with thick mucous, wasn't eating and ended up almost dying because she had become so severely dehydrated. I rushed her straight to the vet again where she was given fluids and put onto a strong dose of antibiotics. After a week she improved tremendously. She was the best I've seen her in years, she was lively, playing (which she hasn't done in years) was eating extremely well, in fact more then she'd ever eaten. She put on weight and was overall happy and healthy. Two weeks later I noticed she was becoming snuffly again. That was four weeks ago. I took her straight back to the vet who restarted her on antibiotics. This time the infection has come with avengeance. She's extremely congested, isn't eating at all as she can't smell her food. I'm having to hand feed her by syringe with blended cat food every four hours. I'm doing steam treatments with her to help loosen it.
In the end our vet recommended doing some investigation. As you can well imagine she's lost a lot of weight and is overall weak. Today she was taken off to the veterinary hospital for x-rays, ct scan, rhinoscopy and swabs. Just after lunch my vet called to say she was under sedation and wanted to take her straight into surgery as she has pus in both middle ears. A double Bulla Osteotomy was suggested. I agreed to it. As soon as I put the phone down my stomach flipped and I had a horrendous feeling I'd made a mistake, I called the hospital straight back and shouted at them to stop the surgery. My head was a mess and I hadn't had time to process it all. I just knew in my heart that she was so weak she wouldn't have come through it. The surgery was stopped thankfully before they'd started and my vet said it was hasty to try to rush it all today but we can discuss it more as it wasn't an emergency life or death situtation.
So at the moment my little Sox is recovering from today's ordeal, she's not home yet as she doesn't recover well from anaesthetic to begin with.
So what I wanted to know is has anyone else ever had this constant snuffling, fluey illness with their cats and how did you treat it? My vet has said once he has all the results from the scan and swabs we will know what we're treating. It could simply be a case of different antibiotics or anti fungal treatment. The pus in both middle ears has come from her nose so there isn't a secondary problem going on. I'm thinking it may be worth trying steroids and different antibiotics. Any other ideas? I'm really not happy to put her through such a big operation when there is no guarantee it'll work and the odds are against her pulling through. Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated.
