Recently Penny's ears have got patches of thin/bald hair. Last time this happened (over a year ago) she had an skin infection which was treated with a cream. So back to the vets yesterday for her. This time there is no sign of an infection or itching. She is also having a few more hairballs than she normally does - she washes & moults well. So the vet has suggested putting her on Yumega which will help with the skin/hair Yumega for cats We started it last night. Has anyone had experience of it? She's also nearly finished her Hills R/D packet so as Hills had emailed their latest product update which said they'd produced a new Prescription Diet weight management range - Metabolic - I discussed using that with the vet, although she wasn't aware of it in detail she thought that it might be worth a try as Penny has reached her target weight (again) but needs to have her weight maintained & she has yo-yo'd in the past. So they've ordered me the small bag to try, should pick it up this evening or tomorrow morning. Lets hope she likes it. I must admit I was very pleased with Hill's customer service as I emailed a query about it to them at the weekend & they rang me Tuesday morning to discuss the product with me and not only that if Penny doesn't get on with it I can return it & get my money back!!! She also got weighed now 3.9Kg was 4Kg just short of a month ago so at least she's not putting on any more weight & looks like we've got her diet right. However I will try & take her to be weighed accurately each month to make sure that she maintains the correct weight. The vets have no problem with just weighing her for free. We need to make sure that she doesn't lose to much otherwise we will need to reduce her Loxicom (Metacam) as she's at the 4Kg dose.

A lot of YD forum users give Yumega plus to their dogs for itchy skin, including me and we all have seen good results I think. I wouldn't give my pets Hills to be honest. To much maize and other unknown ingredients if I remember from when I last looked at it?? What would you like to get out of a cat food?

Thanks for the good news about the Yumega products - hopefully they'll work for Penny. We've tried Royal Canin but Penny wasn't keen on their Light in the past - she eats mainly dried. Mind you she'll happily eat the others RC & James Wellbeloved. The vet suggested Hills way back & we've not had a problem with it. Just compared Royal Canin with Hills - here's the table Product type | Hills brand name | Hills composition | Royal Canin brand name | Royal Canin composition | Weight Reduction | Prescription Diet R/D | Poultry meat meal, maize, maize gluten meal, cellulose, digest, animal fat, minerals, L-lysine, L-carnitine, taurine, vitamins, DL-methionine, trace-elements, beta-carotene. | Veterinary Diet Obesity Management | COMPOSITION: dehydrated poultry meat, wheat, wheat gluten*, vegetable fibres, maize gluten, hydrolysed animal proteins, animal fats, beet pulp, minerals, fish oil, psyllium husks and seeds, hydrolysed crustaceans (source of glucosamine), marigold extract (source of lutein), hydrolysed cartilage (source of chondroitin). We need a product that will make Penny feel full whilst keeping her weight under control along with some wet food which she has to eat to have her meds in so that is Gourmet Gold & Applaws.

I'm afraid I just don't like the look of all that maize. But then thats just me. What about looking at cereal free dry foods? You could still add wet to it. Might stop the itching, I know it's helped my oldest cat Gerri. I now feed both cats on Arden grange sensitive which is fish and potato. It also has fur ball control. JWB also do a cereal free but it hasn't got furball control in that one, were as their furball control one is not cereal free.

Gladys, thanks for the information I'll take a look at Arden Grange. At least the Metabolic is so maize intensive. I don't think Penny's ears are caused by an allergy (although she does have a flea allergy she doesn't have fleas) as there's no sign of dermatitis just the thinning. I think its more a washing/stress/moult issue. The stress being a mix of one of our other cats & potentially her arthritis. The cereal should help her feel fuller without the calories which is what we need to keep her weight down. Cia, thanks. Sorry should have warned you I was going for the record post!
