chantel;I agree,it's peace of mind to have insurance. If pet suffers a lifetime illness like diabetes you are covered on a lifetime policy, and a lady I met with Springer which was attacked on a holiday and ended up needing a leg amputating which cost £4000,(her insurance limit) was very thankful for her pet insurance. We all have car and house insurance, but hope it's never needed. yes Migsy it is just peace of mind really :)we just never know what is around the corner.

Me and hubby have discussed whether I would have just been better opening a savings account and putting money into the account each month but I suppose it is just peace of mind knowing you have some kind of insurance if needed.:-)
I was debating myself whether to just put something away each month when I get my dog but then I read an article in this month's Dogs Monthly about pet insurance and it said that by putting cash away in a bank account you HAVE to be incredibly disciplined about how much you put away into your account. It said that if you put away £25 per month which was what you were, for example, quoted by an insurance company (Sandy's was going to cost me around £22 per month if I remember rightly) after three years your fund would total £900 which, let's face it, would NOT go far if your pet needed veterinary treatment When our FeLV+ cat George needed blood tests, x-ray and a couple of other things (can't remember what but the whole thing took less than 45 minutes!) it came to £600!!!!!!!!! And what happens if, say, your car breaks down which you NEED to get to work (as Neil does with ours as the buses rarely go that way) so you use that 'dog fund' money to buy a new car or get repairs done and a week later your dog falls ill and you simply cannot afford to get them treated so have to PTS That one little paragraph made me realise how vital it was and, funnily enough, last night Neil mentioned something about our dog's insurance (when we get her) so I think even he is realising how important it is I will only use Pet Plan now after being messed about by another company after we lost Tina and one of my customers (Lillian who has Labrador puppy Daisy) will only use them too. She lost her previous lab Millie in July last year but the insurance company never faltered once in paying up promptly in Millie's final 18 months when old age ailments started to catch up with her. She said no way could she have afforded the thousands in treatment that Millie needed so for her it was money well spent (and peace of mind, as you say) to care for a loyal friend and member of her family She said she never needed to use it when Millie was younger but from around 11 or so onwards she developed a touch of arthritis and other niggly old-age things so that was covered until she passed aged 14.

I'm with petplan as well, I've never had a problem claiming for Ebony's asthma from them but they do say if you don't claim for a condition for a year then they can't pay out for any more treatment for that condition (so because I've not claimed for Ebony's asthma for a while I may have to start paying for her medication myself but now that I'm working I'll be able to afford it easier), if I have to start a new claim for anything else then they'll cover it (I've got the lifetime plan)

I certainly wouldn't be happy about that ebony, things like asthma can settle down for a while then have a flare up. If you are on a life time plan I would expect it to be that, pure and simple, and I would argue tooth and nail if they refused.Quite honestly I have never heard of such a loop hole and it doesn't seem right or honest.

I moaned last year when Kai Ruki's pet insurance went up by £5 per month to £18.98. I've just had this year's renewal paperwork and it's going up to £26.83 per month!! I went online and found a much cheaper and similar policy and phoned my insurance company (Tesco, using RSA)to tell them I would be leaving them. The woman on the phone asked if I had a Tesco Clubcard and took the number off me and then said I could have a discount of £8.18, bringing the payment to £18.65 per month, a bit less than I paid for 2015/2016! Okay, I'll stay with them. I shall remember to phone and complain every time I get a renewal for the other policies. I didn't really want to go to another company just in case Kai Ruki gets the same problem with his jaw that I claimed for previously.

Just as well you called. What a cheek! I know when I tried to cancel Sky (slightly different) they were bending over backwards to get me to stay but I found it too dear. I've moved over to Amazon Prime for a one off of £79 a year and get access to loads of stuff so I don't really miss Sky at all.
I'm pleased you got a good result for Kai Ruki's insurance though - that's always a bonus.

It's that time of year again and I've just had the renewal price from Tesco for my policy which is for Kobi, Kiba-Kiba and Bramble. Last year I changed all my other cats, Toffee, Kai Ruki, Kali, Blackberry and Willow to Animal Friends and they were much cheaper and a better policy too.
I haven't got the exact figures on me now but I know that last year I paid £681 (£56.75 per month) for the 3-pet policy and now Tesco have quoted roughly £975!! I have never claimed for Kobi, I have claimed once for Kiba-Khan and that was about 5 years ago and once for Bramble and that was just over 2 years ago. Tesco have split the costs per year as roughly:
Bramble: £174.00 Kobi: £351 Kiba-Khan: £450
I know that Kiba-Khan would be a bit more because he is a pedigree, but that is ridiculous!
I'm back to thinking I'll have to risk going to another insurer for Bramble and if she gets problems with her bladder again I will just have to pay it myself. I'm not worried about Kiba-Khan's existing condition as it was a lump removal.
I don't really want to go without insurance. I'm off to look on Animal Friends for new prices.

No insurance company accepts (new) cats of 7 years and older. I'm not insured. Here Ohra is the cheapest. I have my own health insurance there. Why? Because they sponsor two shelter cats.

Ouch lotsofcats - definitely worth looking around, just put the difference in an account to cover any existing conditions that a new insurer won't cover - it could soon build up over the years - or help towards the next years hike! At leasat the insurers don't get it.

At leasat the insurers don't get it. Great idea tonib and that's what I will be doing. I've changed them all to Animal Friends, much cheaper than my current policy that's due to expire soon and better with a lifetime policy. I have a money box to save the difference every month and I can't get in it so it will only be for any existing conditions that are not covered.
