Roman went out last night without having his kibble - not something he does often. This morning I got up early as I was going to a cat show with my friend & her cats. I found Roman was in on the back of a conservatory chair but hadn't had any of his kibble. He was very lethargic & had a little dried blood immediately below his eye so suspected he'd been in a fight & was feeling a little war weary. I cleaned the dried blood & thought there might be a scratch underneath & also his eye wasn't opening as wide as it would normally but wasn't too worried but left a note for Mark to keep an eye on him.
When I spoke to Mark around 10:30 a.m. Osiris had joined Roman in the conservatory but on another chair & neither of them were interested in food or moving very surprising for Roman who wouldn't even accept his favourite treat (pawns) hand vet to him! So they were shut into our sick bay (dining-room & conservatory combination) & Mark kept an eye on them whilst Lexie could go out as she wanted. Osiris eventually did have some food but was back on the chair not showing any interest in going out - mind you that could be because of the heavy rain.
When I got back around 6:20 p.m. Osiris decided he wanted out so we let him go but Roman still hadn't moved other than to turn-round a few times on the chair back. When I looked at him I saw a discharge from one eye & the third lid definitely was across. So phoned the vet (ours provides the local out of hours service for a number of vets which is good) & we arranged to go straight in. When I picked Roman up, to put him in his basket, he was complaining & I thought I saw a mark on his paw which might have been a bite.
The practice owner was the vet on call tonight & he first put some drops in Roman's eyes & confirmed that they weren't scratched - good news Then he took his temperature - Roman really didn't like this process - even more than normal & was whimpering about it. He was then put on the floor to see how he walked & also to do an assisted handstand with the vet manipulating his hind legs - mobility checking. His temperature was 41.8C - not good at all. The vet asked if I knew for certain that he'd been in a fight & then we checked his paws & saw a black mark which turned out to be a small clump of black fur caught on a claw. Definitely signs of a fight.
Still don't know what the real issue is other than some sort of infection, the vet things he might have got grit/dusts in the eyes which has irritated them - his other had a slight discharge as well. So the vet gave him an combination anti-inflammatory & antibiotic injection & sent Roman home with
Loxicom (anti-inflammatory) to be taken once a day & Amoxycare tablets (antibiotics) one twice a day both starting tomorrow
Maxitrol eye drops - 2 drops 4 times a day in each eye! starting this evening
& instructions to get fluids into him.
Well that was some magic jab as when we got home about 7:45 & let Roman out of the basket back into sick bay he went & sniffed his water & then used the litter tray - definitely more active & 10 minutes later when I took in his tea he was laying on the floor with his eyes wide open!
Its going to be fun giving him the eye drops - he didn't like that first set when we got him back home - even though Mark was holding him. In the week there will only be me for at 1 & probably 2 of the dosages. There's another dose last thing tonight as well.
When we then gave him his tea he tucked in
If he's not improved by Monday we're to go back to the vets but in the meantime Roman's to be kept in s its sick bay for him so the others can go out & then we're keeping Osiris in over night - something he normally chooses to do but hates being forced to! - so Roman has more space around the house at night.
I feel slightly guilty that I didn't arrange to get Mark to take Roman to the vet this morning - not because we had the out of hours charge which we would have on Saturday morning - but because Roman would have been more comfortable sooner but the infection was so progressed then.
What do they say about giving cats meds - with all those dosages its going to be interesting but I'm confident that I will come out unscathed (famous last words) as Roman is such a good boy but not sure where some of the meds may land up in the process!
